This is not only a great way to get involved with OPA, it also earns some points. The election will be at the January, 2004 General Meeting. Two positions, the President and Treasurer, are not open this year (the President is last year’s President-Elect, the Treasurer is a 2-year position and was elected in 2003 to serve until the end of 2004). All other positions are available. Positions marked with an asterisk (*) already have at least one nominee. Chairs must submit reports written or in person to the six board meetings, members at large must attend four of six board meetings and take on board assignments as needed. Positions open for election:President Elect (becomes President in 2005, 24 points over 2 years)* Clay in Education, Coordinates teachers and programs needing teachers for the OPA funded clay classes and events (6 points), * Empty Bowls, Coordinates the large July Empty Bowls fundraiser at the Blues Festival (12 points),* Hospitality, Makes coffee and supplies snacks to OPA General Meetings (6 points),* Justice Center Windows, Coordinates displays in the downtown Portland Justice Center (6 points), * Membership, Keeps track of new, current, and renewing members (9 points),* Mentor, Helps emerging ceramicists who are trying to get started professionally (6 points),* Newsletter Editor, Writes six newsletters per year (15 points),* Picnic, Coordinates annual OPA picnic (6 points, no nominees) Programs, Coordinates the post-meeting Progams for OPA General Meetings, these are usually slide shows, demonstrations or other informative talks (9 points) (Nominee Laurie Childers would like to co-chair this with someone, or you could run for the whole position) Webmaster, Maintains the OPA and Showcase web sites (9 points),* Workshops, Organizes workshops of interest to our membership (6 points, no nominees) Voice mailbox, Checks OPA voice mail regularly and returns calls (6 points)* Any member may run for any position. Also, people may share some of these positions (share both the responsibilities and the points). If you would like to split a position with a friend, ask Michael if it would be appropriate. TREASURER POSITIONS FOR OPA & RECOMMENDED CHANGES IN BY LAWS: The Treasurers recommend that there be two treasurers. One would be responsible for the Showcase banking account and financial reports for Showcase and be responsible to the OPA treasurer. The other treasurer would be the OPA treasurer and have overall responsibility to the membership, board, auditor, and CPA as currently written in the by-laws, Article V, Section 8. They also recommend that each of these treasurers serve a four-year commitment, but that one treasurer be elected every two years so that there is at least one treasurer who is not learning the position. The schedule should be that the newest treasurer would start as the OPA treasurer, since demands are not as intense as the showcase position and would allow time, under less pressure, to learn the accounting system. This learning process would be under the guidance of the Showcase treasurer who was OPA treasurer in the proceeding year. The Showcase treasurer would guide the OPA treasurer while also learning the Showcase process. Should an individual choose to run for election at the end of the 4-year commitment, the rotations should be maintained. Information for both treasurers should be interchanged monthly so that both computers are kept up and agrees with each other using 100% compatible financial software. The above change requires changes to ARTICLE V: OFFICERS Section 1. Title: The officers of the corporation shall be the President, President-Elect, Past President, Treasurer, Secretary, Showcase (s) and Newsletter Editor. CHANGE underscored: Co-Treasurers Section 2. Election: The officers of the corporation, except the President, Past President, Treasurer and the Showcase chair(s) shall be elected by the majority vote of the members present at the January annual meeting. The OPA Presidency is a three-year commitment. The President-elect shall serve as President the following year; the President from the previous year becomes Past President. The President-elect, President, Past President, Secretary, and Newsletter Editor shall serve a one-year term and the Treasurer shall serve a two-year term. The Showcase Chair shall be elected by the Showcase Steering committee. An officer may be reelected without limitation on the number of terms he/she may serve. CHANGE underscored: …,and Newsletter Editor shall serve a one year term. Each Treasurer shall serve a four-year term with alternate treasurer elections every two years. Section 3. Vacancies: If the President-elect resigns, the position is filled by a vote at the next general meeting. If the President resigns, the President-elect fills the position for the remainder of the term, in addition to serving as President the next year. If a Past President resigns, the position stays unfilled for the remainder of the term. Vacancies of all other elected offices shall be filled by vote of the remaining Board. Terms of office in this case will be until the next annual meeting, at which time the position will be filled through the regular election procedure. CHANGE (insert): …remainder of the term. If a Treasurer resigns, the position shall be filled by vote of the Board for the remainder of the term for that Treasurer. Vacancies of all other elected… The Treasurers also recommend that the membership while make another change to the by-laws: ARTICLE XI: MISCELLANEOUS: Since there is not a Section 3 in the current by-laws: Change Section 4 to Section 3. Then make one of the two following changes: Section 3. (if above is approved): Treasurer and one Board member may authorize expenditures up to $100; A quorum of the Board of Directors may authorize expenditures up to $500; Expenditures of more than $500 must be approved by a majority vote of a quorum of the membership. Change: that the figures be changed to 300, $800, more than $800 Second version for: Section 3: With the exception for those items which are part of standard operating procedures: Treasurer and one Board member may authorize expenditures up to $100; A quorum of the Board of Directors may authorize expenditures up to $500; Expenditures of more than $500 must be approved by a majority vote of a quorum of the membership. The original figures have been in place since some time before 1998 and do not reflect the current costs of items that may be needed. LOCAL CLAY & CLAYFEST CERAMIC SHOWCASE 2004 SHOWCASE 2004 is steaming along. The new, larger show is making it necessary for us to re-work many things. The overall look of the show in being re-vamped, with an eye to continuity of signage and graphics. A few things that are being planned are enhanced client comfort, wider aisles and more seating. We also will have booths from colleges and booths promoting education. Planned are adult play areas, where the big kids can play with clay. The sales area will have more elbow room. A newer, nicer Program Guide is being worked on. Thanks to the many people who are working on this, it takes an immense amount of time to make all of this happen. The show will be April 23-25 at the Convention Center in Portland.SHOWCASE WINTER RETREAT #2: The Long Range Planning Committee will host another ½ day retreat for all who are interesting in future of Showcase. It will be a chance to talk about where Showcase is right now, with all its many facets. We will also talk about WHY we put on Showcase, and how we want the show to be in the years to come. Ginger Steele has offered her conference room again: 3285 NW Susbauer Rd, Cornelius, OR, Saturday, Jan. 10, beginning at 9:30 am, If we go into the afternoon, we’ll order pizza for lunch. If you have any questions, contact Cynthia Spencer-Hadlock, www.corvallisfallfestival.com. SLIDES SLIDES SLIDES. PHOTOS PHOTOS PHOTOS are needed by publicity!!!!
Please send quality 35mm slides and good contrast black and white prints (5 x7
or 8 x 10) to Cyra Duquella (131 SE 74th Ave, Portland 97215). She will then
send images to Deb Nelson, Chair of Paid Publicity. ALERT: SHOWCASE CHAIRS will be receiving Sponsorship packets by the end
of December. This is a 4-page form that our sponsorship Chair, Grace Sanchez,
has developed in order for us to approach businesses for sponsorship-- either
through gifts of money or in-kind donations. If you have ideas about a sponsor
they must first be approved by Grace Sanchez or the Steering Committee, so that
we don't have any overlapping requests. Totem Installation: Committee Chair Deborah Shapiro is still looking for about 20 more people to participate in the TOTEM POLE GROUP PROJECT.
FIRE MARSHAL & CARDBOARD PEDESTALS: David Fitzpatrick has been talking to the Fire Marshall, and reports that it sounds like we will be able to continue to use cardboard pedestals in our displays. The problem at Showcase last year was really set off because there was a pile of cardboard boxes with wadded paper in them that were left out and were considered to be a fire hazard. This was a gross violation, and when we did not clean them up promptly, the Fire Marshall got mad. The fire code allows one day's worth of backstock storage in your booth in cardboard boxes, but these should not be a big paper-filled mess that someone could easily light a match to. Personal drapery will need flame-proofing. The Fire Marshall also gave David a list of places with fire retardant paints. NEXT SHOWCASE STEERING COMMITTEE MEETING is Wednesday January 7th, 6:30 at the Contemporary Crafts Museum--3934 SW Corbett, Portland. POTTERY NEWS NEW ART CENTER IN EUGENE: The Downtown Initiative for the Visual Arts (DIVA) at 110 W. Broadway plans to bring the community high-quality visual art exhibits, a wide range of classes, and lectures on a variety of topics. DIVA will be open Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 12:00–5:00 pm. There is no admission charge. Their gift shop includes work by members of Local Clay. For more information please contact DIVA at 344-DIVA or visit DIVA’s website at www.divanow.org, or Dean Brown at diva@efn.org. NEW GAS KILN REGULATIONS IN OREGON: In November, OPA members Janet Buskirk and John Alland attended a meeting of building inspectors from various parts of Oregon who were establishing policy for non-UL or ANSI listed gas appliances. They were especially concerned about kilns, glass blowing furnaces and glory holes, forges, crucibles, and other high temperature equipment that has not been manufactured by a certified company. The policy they were writing is not official building code, it is merely suggested guidelines for building inspectors. In general, they prefer to see gas kilns outdoors, in a kiln shed that is six or more feet from other buildings and the shed should be all non-combustible construction (all metal, for instance). The shed should be open on 3 or more sides. Indoor kilns must have a hood. All kilns should have ASO (automatic shutoff) assembly with safety pilots, and indoor kilns should have solenoid gas shutoff valve. Apparently, we are also supposed to label them "HOT" anywhere with exterior temperatures over 145°F. When kilns are near wood, if the temperature is a mere 117°F above room temperature, the wood will very gradually turn to charcoal, and eventually may ignite. This worries them. If your kiln fires to over 2000°F, your chimney needs to be 20 feet higher than buildings within 50 feet of it. Chimney regulations for lower temperatures are much more lenient (if I remember correctly, the chimney has to be 3 feet higher than your kiln shed roof, I tried to find out the actual rule, but did not get the info before publication). These rules are in the process of being written, so stay tuned for updates. TILE PARTNERS FOR HUMANITY is a nonprofit partnership between the tile industry and Habitat for Humanity International. They provide donated tile products, installation labor and other support to HFHI. TPFH pledged, on behalf of the industry, to provide Habitat with $250,000 worth of materials and labor per year for a minimum pledge of $1,250,000 over five years. For more information visit www.tpfh.com, CERAMIC MATERIALS IN DEFENSE APPLICATIONS: Some ceramic engineering professors from the University of Missouri are improving the materials for missile components. They are developing ultra-high-temperature ceramics to make missile nozzles stronger and more resistant to heat and thermal shock. They have received $400,000 from the U.S. Army Space and Missile Defense Command to create a new material using silicon carbide that can withstand extremely high temperatures, with greater thermal shock resistance than anything made before. Currently missile nozzles use metal rather than ceramic materials. Maybe this stuff could be useful someday. Ceradyne, Inc has received approximately $9 million for the company's ceramic body armor systems to protect certain elite U.S. military personnel. They also make small arms protective inserts. This stuff doesn’t sound like it will be useful for any of us. THE SOUL OF A BOWL is a book Contemporary Crafts just published about Don Reitz, Frank Boyden, Jenny Lind, and Tom & Elaine Coleman. It is in conjunction with an exhibition at Contemporary Crafts, Jan 17-March 7. The book is beautiful, with stunning pictures. It may be purchased at Contemporary Crafts or at Graystone Gallery. THE STUDIO POTTER NETWORK has re-appeared. They are a grassroots organization of potters’ groups, with a goal of fostering communication among potters everywhere. You can join either by being part of an organization that is a member (OPA used to be, and hopefully will be again) or by choosing the "Subscriber Plus" option when you subscribe to Studio Potter magazine. Check www.studiopotter.org. They have a pottery video library, a list of members who you can stay with when you travel, and they are a great networking organization for us.
