OPA BUSINESS

THE ELECTRONIC NEWSLETTER: Perhaps you were looking forward to never having this Newsletter darken your mailbox. Perhaps you were dreading having to find it online. We at the OPA Newsletter and Electronic Communication bureaus are trying to make everyone happy.

The OPA Board has telephoned most members of OPA to ask them questions about what they would like to see OPA do in the next few years. Most of these results will be tallied after Showcase. One of the questions people were asked was whether they would like to receive their Newsletter via the US Mail (as you always have) or via email. The reason OPA would like to send the Newsletter via email is cost. You dues are $45 per year. Of that, about $12 pays the Newsletter printing and postage. When the dues were set at $45, Newsletter costs were much lower. This year, in order to balance our budget we slashed the Workshop budget as well as several other budgets that will make the coming year a serious belt-tightener for OPA.

An obvious way to cut costs was to email the Newsletter to as many people as we can. If half of the OPA will accept an email Newsletter we probably can avoid raising Membership dues. You still have the option of receiving it through the mail, but we hope that people will consider the electronic version.

The current plan is this: We will produce an electronic version as well as the old fashioned printed one. For the April and June Newsletters, we will send both formats to all members. The Membership List and the Showcase Application will continue to be mailed the old way. If an OPA Board Member telephoned you and asked you how you wanted to receive your Newsletter, then, beginning in August, you will get it that way until you tell us otherwise. You are all set. If no one contacted you or if you did not answer that question, and if we have an email address for you, we will automatically switch you to the email only version in August. If you do not want to be switched to the email version, contact your Newsletter Editor (preferably not by phone), janetbuskirk@yahoo.com, 4614 SE Salmon St , Portland OR 97215 .

The Data Coordinator, Nick Molatore, is working on various versions of the electronic Newsletter. We plan to send it out a variety of ways, so hopefully you will like one of them. The electronic version will be sent one or two days after the mailed version, so that people can get all of the info at the same time regardless of the delivery method.

If you have not already told an OPA Board Member how you would like to receive your Newsletter, please fill out the form in this Newsletter and mail it to us.

OPA PICNIC & 25TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION(S): Brace yourselves kids! Not only are we having a whiz zinger of an annual picnic this year, but also two other festive gatherings to

celebrate the fact that OPA has just turned 25. The picnic this year will take place at Larry & Debi Nelson's sprawling estate in Hillsboro on Sunday September 11. The theme of the picnic will be 'FIRE', not only because we fire stuff, but also because Mt. St. Helens blew the same year OPA came to be, and is doing it again now. (wait till you see the cake). Think BBQ, think Fire Dancing, think Hot Live Music, think Fire Works, and think about Larry Nelson "firing" greenware pots into the trees with some kind of huge crazy catapult. But wait. Even before that goes down, we are having an all OPA invite to a Pit Fire on the beach the first weekend of August. If you've never done this, here's your chance to see what it's all about, and also camp out on the beach with fellow clay groupies. We will all bring our own bisqued pieces along with the materials and tools to do several pit fires. If you don't want to camp, then just come out Sunday to witness the 'unearthing'. The culminating event to this year's celebrations will be the GoodWill Prom. Yes, that's right, now is your chance to attend that prom you missed (or to do it better this time). Get as formal as you can, but all garb must come from GoodWill. Pick a decade, pick a clique, but don't pick your nose near the punch bowl. Saturday night, October 1, adult event. $5 gets you in the gym. Presentation of awards to old and not so old members. Seeking decoration committee and hall monitors. More details to come in the next newsletter, or call James DeRosso for info: 503-232-6816. If you want to be a part of the beach camping pit fire, call James promptly for reserving camp sites and preparation info.

CLAY IN EDUCATION: We are always looking for people to do some Clay in Ed projects. If you know of a senior citizens center where you would like to teach or have an idea for a children’s program, you could get paid by the OPA to teach a class or workshop. The way this works is you find a place that needs a ceramics class or workshop, especially a place that might otherwise not have access to this type of thing, you approach them and ask if they would be interested, then you call the Clay in Ed Chair and ask if you can do this teaching project. You are paid by the OPA for every hour you spend actually teaching (no pay for prep time). Interested? Contact Nancy Hart, nancyjohart@yahoo.com,  or Kay Irish kayirish@softhome.net.

If you have not already told an OPA Board Member how you would like to receive your future Newsletters, please fill out this form and mail it to: Janet Buskirk, 4614 SE Salmon St, Portland OR 97215. You may also email this information to Janetbuskirk@yahoo.com. If we have not heard from you by August 1 and we have an email address for you, you will automatically begin receiving the Newsletters via email.

FROM THE SHOWCASE CHAIR: With Showcase just days away I want to thank the Steering Committee, Committee Chairs, and the Long Range Planning group for all of their hard work and vision for producing an inspiring and diverse show. I also want to thank the members for their participation and commitment to their committee work and their work shifts during the show. In addition, thanks to all volunteers, spouses, and friends who give support to the potters while preparing for the largest ALL CLAY show in the country. We couldn't do it without you! Good luck to all-- Natalie Warrens

TV CREW AT SHOWCASE: On opening day from 6am to 9am Drew Carney will be shooting intermittent live spots for the Fox Good Day Oregon Show. We will have a crew of our people working with him to smooth things out and make sure carts do not collide with television cable across the floor. We will do all we can to keep things running smoothly for the Friday morning unloading of pots, but the TV van will have to take a spot or two in our loading lot and there may be some short lived inconvenience as we shut off an aisle for two minutes at a time. It will be a small price to pay for what will total 11+ minutes of free TV and promotion for Showcase. Bear with us and it should be fun promoting our fabulous show. They will be gone an hour before opening. -Ann Selberg LOCAL CLAY-CLAYFEST.

CLAYFEST 2005: The applications for ClayFest·2005 are available. If you have not already submitted yours, you can download one from their webpage (www.clayfest.org/showapp.htm) or email registrar@clayfest.org and they will send you one.
The ClayFest Steering Committee recently added another Chair position to coordinate all electronic/computer needs of Local Clay and ClayFest. This Webmaster Trainee position has been filled by Virginia Taylor. The position of Registrar Trainee was vacated when the original candidate decided not to continue; however, given the fact that the work of the Registrar is virtually complete with the application process and booth allocation, the Trainee position was not reopened for the 2005 show.

WIRELESS CREDIT CARD TERMINALS: If you are interested in using a wireless credit card system for your business, OPA member Deb Bouchette has found this service. Banctech in Texas (info@banctech.net) charges a $75 activation fee, $25 per month using AT&T, Cingular and T-Mobile, plus a 7 cent per call fee.

HIGH TECH KILN SHELVES: Geil Kilns is now offering a nitride bonded silicon carbide shelf for $107 for 12x24” and $123 for 14x28” + 10% packing + freight. These sound comparable to the Saint Gobain Advancer ($145 for 12x24”) and Crystar ($195 for 12x24”) shelves that many of us use. Has anyone tried these shelves yet? Advancer and Crystar shelves are extremely thin, lightweight, incredibly tough kiln shelves that your Newsletter Editor recommends highly. Contact Geil at www.kilns.com, 800-887-4345, Saint Gobain products available through Smith-Sharpe, www.kilnshelf.com, 866-545-6743.

REFLECTIONS ON A GREAT MENTOR : “I learned this morning of the passing of my mentor and ceramics teacher Marilyn Levine. I believe our clay community has lost another one of the greats. Marilyn died on April 2 at her home in Oakland California at only 69. I studied with Marilyn in Regina Saskatchewan Canada in 1972/73 during those pivotal days in Saskatchewan Canada’s clay history. Marilyn, then a chemist and recently arrived in Regina with her chemist husband Sid, did not receive the one position open in the chemistry faculty at the University of Regina offered to only one of them. So, Marilyn began working with clay at the U of R under Jack Sures. Her chemistry aptitude lead her very quickly into fascinating glaze research, intelligent solutions, and very sophisticated work. I always felt her ambition had to have been in part due to the above circumstance. When I studied with Marilyn at the U of R, she felt obliged to teach us wheel work although it was evident her heart was not in it. Cups, however, were always a love of hers. Cups to be used. Cups you could decorate. Cups you could express through. True to the times in Regina ’s art department, abstraction was the flavor of the day. Marilyn’s precursor to her infamous ‘ trompe l‘oeil ‘ leather sculptures were abstract works with leathery facsimile surfaces. However, having just quickly come and gone at the U of R was David Gilhooly and along with him the influence of the funk clay movement out of University of California at Davis . We then saw U of R’s ceramic department move from abstraction to realism. Abstract painters and sculptors the likes of Joe Fafard and Victor Cicanski began making cows and cupboards of vegetables, respectively. Potters began replacing pots with pigs and Japanese brushstrokes with aardvarks.

“We had hugely successful art school corridor sales where students and faculty alike set work out on bare 4x8 collapsible tables and the Who’s Who of Regina cued up for hours waiting to purchase the 25 cent door stops or a $30 chef-d’eouvre. One of the coveted pieces in my humble collection is one of those early leathery abstractions of Marilyn’s, sitting very precise and very minimal.

“Marilyn’s advise to us upon inquiring “how and where do we go from here” very precisely and very minimally was ‘it’s the work – just keep on working.’” -Sandra Ledingham, Ceramist, recently relocated from Saskatchewan to Oregon .
