Showcase information DATES TO REMEMBER: Nov 4: OPA General Meeting Ceramists swamped by glass are the equivalent of blues artists swamped by rock ‘n’ roll. Don’t miss this great opportunity! Also mark your calendars for the January Program, a dry run of the panel of OPA members who will speak at NCECA. Their topic is how we run Showcase. The panelists will be Deborah Shapiro, Patrick Horsley, Mark Heimann and Janet Buskirk. They will use this opportunity to work out kinks and glean feedback from the OPA Membership. Come help put the final touches on the panel presentation! OPA BOARD MEETING: Tuesday, Dec 6th at Annie Stecker’s, 3395 Deerlake Ct SE in Salem, 503-399-0590. Potluck dinner at 6pm, meeting at 6:30. It will probably be at a Grange Hall. James DeRosso will email a notice to all OPA members as the date approaches. If you want to go and do not receive the email, contact him, 503-232-6816, james3d@easystreet.com. Committee is putting together a list of members who would like to teach. Those who are interested please send the following information: Name, address, phone number, email, age levels you like to teach, types of projects or presentations you can provide. Send to Kay Irish, 25721 Perkins Rd, Veneta OR 97487 or kayirish1@netzero.netPOINTS REVIEW COMMITTEE: Janet Buskirk, Babette Harvey and Audrey Graham have been meeting to re-evaluate the OPA/Showcase points system. This needs to be done periodically. They are evaluating each job’s points based on: The number of hours the job takes; The importance the job has within our organization (if the job is performed well or poorly, will the entire organization be impacted or will most people be unaffected?); What is the degree of honesty and absolute trust required for the job? (specifically this is for jobs that require money handling); What specialized, hard to find skills are required for this job? (for instance graphic design, computer fluency); The “Pain in the ass” factor of a job. For instance, do you have to perform small responsibilities for the job almost every day? Every week throughout the year? Is the job always hanging over your head? This can vary in how it manifests itself, some jobs are a constant nuisance (checking the voice mail, for instance). Other jobs are never completely finished (Showcase Publicity, for instance). So far, it appears that many jobs have reasonable numbers of points. There are also some that will probably be changed next year.JUSTICE CENTER WINDOW DISPLAY: Michelle Gallagher has filled one window with a “Monsters and Masks” show, but there is still space in one more window. If you have Monsters or Masks, contact her. She also is preparing “The Decorated Table”, to run from early November through mid January. Contact her if you would like to have work in either exhibit, thefunnything@hotmail.com, 503-232-9094MARKETING WORKSHOP: The OPA Mentor Chair will put together a workshop on marketing your work, to be held in January. These workshops are aimed at newer members who are either new to the area or new to selling their work, but everyone is welcome. There will be more info in the December Newsletter. OPA RECIPE BOOK: At the Picnic, potters brought their favorite dish of food in their favorite dish that they made. The recipes for the food were collected and the lovely dishes were photographed. A recipe book on CD (“Dish: OPA Cooks”) is being planned, and the OPA Board suggested that we should also provide a glaze recipe from the dish. This may be something we sell at the NCECA/OPA booth. If you would like to add your dish, send a digital image of the dish full of food with the food and glaze recipe. If your dish was photographed, send your glaze recipe to Larry Nelson, nelson@chehalemmountainpottery.com, 19438 SW Neugebauer Rd, Hillsboro OR 97123.NEW TREASURER NEEDED FOR OPA: Our Current OPA Treasurer, Deborah Bouchette, will be stepping down at the end of 2006. The second Treasurer, Romaine Harris, has already stepped down from her position. We will be looking for a Treasurer to train with Deborah during 2006 and take over the job in 2007. Are you interested? Contact Deborah (503-690-2448, virtuosa@aleatoric-art.com) to ask for details or come to a Board Meeting. One will feature the Showcase award winners from the past several years, and Georgies has agreed to pay for its printing. Boni Deal will design it. The OPA/NCECA juried show featuring current and past members of Oregon Clay Guilds will also have a poster, and Skutt has agreed to print it. We are still determining whether there is money to print a poster for the teapot shows that OPA is also sponsoring.
RESTAURANT GUIDE: Deb Bouchette has begun putting together a restaurant guide for NCECA. Many OPA members have submitted restaurants, as well as supermarkets and liquor stores that are easy to get to from downtown and the Convention Center. Ceramics Monthly has expressed interest in this. They print an annual guide to the NCECA conference in their March issue.
OPA NON-PROFIT BOOTH AT NCECA: The OPA is trying to rent a non-profit booth at NCECA. This booth would give us a presence at the Conference, and we can hand out our posters, restaurants guides and whatever else we come up with. Pamela Mattson McDonald will coordinate this, with help from Patricia Hoffman and Sian Alexander. We need people to help staff the booth March 8-10. Shifts will be two hours long. Do you want to help promote our fabulous organization? Meet and greet the ceramic world! Contact Pamela with the days and times you are available, matmcd2002@yahoo.com, 503-325-5812
OPA SHOWS AT NCECA: The OPA is sponsoring three shows at NCECA: “Membership has its benefits” is open to current and previous members of the Oregon ceramics organizations (Oregon Potters Association, Local Clay and Clayfolk), The other two examine the teapot from two different angles: “Form and Function: The Teapot” is open to functional teapots, “The Mad Hatter’s Tea” open to teapots approached as a sculptural and decorative form and/or conceptual entity. Look in the “Opportunities” section of this Newsletter for more info. Skutt has donated the use of one of their warehouses for these shows. We will need help preparing the jury (early to mid January), hanging and tearing down the show, and manning the show during the Conference. It will be fun as well as educational. If you would like to help with any of this, contact Janet Buskirk, 503-231-2810, janetbuskirk@yahoo.com. We may also ask some OPA members to demonstrate on the days of the exhibition tours.
BEER STEINS FOR THE FOOD BANK: Kristin Yount is organizing an Empty Bowls event during NCECA. Potters will donate beer steins and Bridgeport Brewery will display them and sell them with a pint of beer included. If you would like to donate a Stein, contact her, 503-231-5752 HOTELS DURING NCECA: The main Conference Hotel is the Hilton downtown (503-226-1611). Studios in the Portland area will be open on Saturday afternoon and studios in outlying areas will be open Sunday (giving people a change to stop if they are driving home after NCECA). This tour can also include wood fired kilns (perhaps unloading or loading?). There will be an application and this will be juried from photos of the potter(s) or clay artist(s) work.
