JUNE 1988

(503) 222-0533

'The challenge is to do the thing you have to do because you're in love with it and can't do anything else. Not because you want to become famous or rich, but because you will be unhappy if you can't do it. It is not something you can turn on and off.."

-Warren McKenzie (on Randy & Jan McKechie's refrigerator, posted on Clayart by Lee Love, sent here by Mark Heimann)

At Ceramic Showcase, an overheard conversation:

Father: "These pots are made out of clay and then they were fired."

Young daughter: "Does that mean they couldn't do their job anymore?"

"We do not simply 'expose' children to the arts. We instruct them in life skills through the arts. The arts are inseparable from daily life and are essential tools for understanding each other and our environment. Of course it is important that all children learn to read, but it may be even more important that there are artists producing something worth reading."

-Ed Rutenkroger, Coordinator of Arts in Education, Bertie County Schools and Chair, NC Alliance for Arts Education

OPA CLAY IN EDUCATION FUND: The OPA has a fund which pays for our members to teach ceramics to people who would otherwise not have access to education about clay. This fund is administered by Jeanne Charles, with aid from Kristen Applegate-King. It is funded by $5 from each members $35 dues payment, as well as from sales of pots marked with the "education" labels at Showcase. So far, we have sent OPA members to pre-schools, Headstart programs, and to teach public school teachers how to teach ceramics. These programs have been in the Portland Metro area as well as in some rural areas in Oregon. The program is not limited to children, although currently children's programs have received most of it. Anyone interested in this can call Jeanne.

OPA JOB DESCRIPTIONS: Sandy Brown is putting together a book of OPA's job descriptions. This will be a brief description of what duties are performed by each committee chair (or other important position). Send your job description to Sandy at 722 Lone Oak Rd, Longview WA 98632

FROM THE PRESIDENT: "Showcase '98 was an overwhelming success due to the year round work of Mark Heimann and all of the committee chairs. Congratulations and a resounding thank you to all. The steering committee has had their wrap up meeting and are already scheduling meetings to plan Showcase '99. We are fortunate to have Mark Heimann's commitment to chair again in '99.

"The OPA board met in May and it was a crowded room. We have a large enthusiastic board this year. It is my hope that by the end of the year each member will be working on a special project to enhance our organization. Last year OPA newcomers' meetings were very successful. We have two meetings scheduled for this summer, and they are announced in this newsletter. I highly recommend that new members participate. It is an opportunity for relaxing social interactions and particularly good time to connect with each other. With over 350 members the OPA can be a bit intimidating. Small groups socializing are a great conduit for forming new friendships and finding your own niche.

"Empty Bowls is another way to participate in a positive experience which I believe gives more to the potter than is usually acknowledged. Good music, warm weather, friendly banter and watching the bowls fly out of the booth often as fast as they can be put on shelves. Taking a few hours out of your already full schedule to glaze a bunch of bowls, volunteering to pick up bowls or working in the booth...it's all a plus.

"Last but not least, to properly enjoy this newsletter, a special time out is advised to include a favorite drink, a comfortable chair, maybe sitting in the sun and a kind thought for our newsletter editor who pulled this together again. Thanks Janet"

--from Mary Walyer

CERAMIC SHOWCASE

FROM THE 1998 SHOWCASE CHAIR: "Showcase '98 was a great success...a hearty thanks to everyone for jobs well done and well made!

"Now we look ahead... Showcase '99 dates are May 5-9, 1999.

"The grapevine has told you about ideas to expand Showcase in 2000. This is not the first time Showcase has had to cope with growth and an expanding workload. To make a long story short, after a lot of opinions, questions, meetings and reality checks, a decision was made to postpone any major changes until 2001. Frankly we need time to really think this through in financial, committee, workshift, facility and manpower terms.

"Consequently I am putting together a sub-committee of ten to address all of the logistics of expansion. I hope to have pro and con represented, as well as long-time and new members, Portland area and non Portland area. We will assemble and distribute information to all OPA members to ensure an "educated" vote on the final decision. If you would like to serve with this group, please call me ASAP-.

"As always, if you have ANY feedback about Showcase, please contact me by phone, fax (503-631-8683) or email (markmann@teleport.com). Remember, too, that we need your time and commitment as well as your ideas. We are working for each other and for a high-quality show, not just for points. Thanks for your support."

-Mark Heimann

SHOWCASE 1998 made $405,000! Pretty darned good for our humble show! Our expenses were $51,700, which were a little lower than last year. Overall, there were very few glitches. One of the major problems we had was with people who dropped out but did not notify the Committee and Workshift Committees. This left us shorthanded in several situations when we could have rescheduled other people had we known. Otherwise, the show ran very smoothly! Thanks to our fearless leader Mark, as well as to all of the Committee Chairs and their helpers! The award winners this year were: Pat Horsley, Best of Show; John Groth, Second Place; Natalie Warrens, Third Place; Patty Maly, Bennett Welsh "Decorated Pot" Award; Pat Strauss, Best Booth. Congratulations to everyone!

The new booth selection process was popular. Of the 33 people who filled out their survey, 91% liked the new process, 3% liked the old process, 3% liked nothing at all, 0% had suggestions for other processes (adds up to more than 100% because some people liked both old and new processes)

The Gallery Registration Committee sent out an evaluation form to the Gallery-only participants. Thank you to people who have returned it. The suggestions are valuable and many will be incorporated next year. Susan Roden has forwarded many responses to other Showcase committees as well. If you have not yet filled out your evaluation, this is your chance to have your voice heard!

Broken pots claims were mostly pretty minor. As of 1999, we will not accept claims for broken work worth less than $20.

Courtney Frisse again photographed pots at the show. This went well, and was convenient for our members.

NEXT SHOWCASE STEERING COMMITTEE MEETING: June 24 at 6:30pm at Audrey Graham's, 32493 SW Juliette in Wilsonville, call for directions.

COMMITTEES FROM 1998: "Thank all of you who: completed your Committee assignments; called me and the Work Shift Chair when you dropped out of Showcase; and especially those of you who dropped out and did your Committee Assignments anyway. You are people who make Showcase the success that it is.

"On the other hand, those of you who: did not complete your Committee or Work Shift assignments; did NOT call when you dropped out; or (worst of all for all of us!) dropped out at the last minute, caused a GREAT DEAL of extra work! Please read and follow the instructions for dropping out of the show more carefully next year. Thank you in advance for your cooperation."

-Nancy Hart, Committee Assignment Chair

SHOWCASE LOST & FOUND: Peter Meyer lost a crowbar that was a family heirloom. Please call him if you have it, 541-382-4849. Marilyn Cony is looking for the metal corners to her booth that may have been left at Showcase last year, please call. Janet Buskirk found a leather bag with someone's makeup in it.

COMMITTEE CHAIR POSITIONS FOR 1999

Building Committee Co-Chair: Work with Farshad Barman, getting to know what is involved with this committee. This committee is responsible for placement of people in Showcase and keeps track of where their booths are as they move about, which can be a lot of work! This committee is responsible for physically taping out the floor before we set up the show. Knowledge of how Showcase runs is important, familiarity with OPA members is also a plus. You must be available on Wednesday morning prior to show set up to supervise the floor taping, as well as throughout the show in case something needs to be changed. A very responsible position. Call Farshad for more information.

Holding Table Chair: Responsible for setting up holding table area before show and taking it down at the end. Assesses how the area is functioning and if physical changes need to be made from year to year. Brings this information to the Steering Committee. Good committee for out of towner. Greg Tomlinson was former chair.

Mailing Chair Trainee: This committee keeps track of the upkeep of the mailing list. We hire a mailing list service to do the data entry, etc. This committee is the liaison to that service. You pick up the new additions from the box at Showcase, get new additions from members before the show and make sure the service gets them. When the poster is printed you coordinate with the Postering Committee to make sure the posters are distributed well. You also solicit a restaurant to give us a gift certificate for the drawing. You will work with Ken Pincus this year, and take over the position in 2000.

PUBLICITY Co-Chair: If you want to learn a lot about the media, how to promote OPA and everything else, this is your opportunity! It requires a tremendous COMMITMENT, but the rewards are wonderful. You will be working with Audrey Graham, a wonderful and patient trainer. Come on, step right up, you can do it!

Poster Trainee: Boni Deal would like a poster apprentice to work with her in 1999 and take over the design of the poster for 2000. Graphic Design experience is important.

Sponsorship: This committee solicits sponsors to finance our show. It is helpful to live somewhat near Portland. Lynn Berry was the chair in 1998.

Treasurer/Cash Sales: In charge of keeping track of money during the show. Makes deposits, etc. Good committee for out-of-towner. Should have good knowledge of how show runs, Familiar with OPA members. Responsible position, requires commitment. Alexis Campbell is the retiring chair.

If you are interested in any of the above positions, please send IN WRITING the following information: Name; address; phone number; Number of years in OPA; Previous involvement in OPA; why you are interested in position and how you are qualified (Brief summary). Send to Nancy Hart, Committee Placement Chair, 6161 SW Salmon St, Portland OR 97221. The Steering Committee will review these applications and make all of the decisions. Please have applications postmarked no later than July 10, 1998. Thank you for your interest!

CHAIR FOR 1999: Mark Heimann has agreed to chair the show in 1999 and 2000! Wow! Thanks Mark! He is willing to have a co-chair, though, and you can call him if you have any questions.

SALEM ARTISTS' STUDIO TOUR: The Salem Art Association is planning a tour of various artists' studios. Saturday Sept 19. Call 503-581-2228.

WHOLESALE MARKETING TIPS: (Excerpted from the ACGA Newsletter, they excerpted it from a handout from Wendy Rosen at NCECA) .

-In your first shipment to a gallery, include a small plastic stand up display with a 50-75 word biography of yourself. Have it ready made so the gallery can just grab it and stick it on the shelf next to your work.

-With all shipments, include s pack of candy. The candy (and your work) are less likely to sit in the boxes as long

-If you are getting re-orders three times a year, you are doing well. Four times a year, you may be underpriced. Two times a year, you should call the gallery and ask them how you can help (share advertising, do a mailing, have a reception? Standard markup is 2.3, galleries will usually tolerate you selling your work directly at a 2.0 markup.

-If you offer to share advertising, you could try a $250 "date book" ad in American Style Magazine. This could list all of your galleries and shows.

-If you are seeking gallery representation, don't just walk in with a portfolio. Call and invite them to lunch. Ask their advice. Bring examples of your work, ask them if it is a cohesive body of work, what pricing would be appropriate, and if they are not interested, what other galleries would they suggest?

-The Rosen Group offers free mentorship service in most areas of the US. They will contact someone to have lunch with you and give you advice. The Rosen group benefits because you might want to be in one of their shows sometime.

-When you send information to galleries, include a stamped self addressed envelope.

-If you do a wholesale show, have some of the following in your booth: articles about you; brochures; postcards customers may take; a price list.

-Send a postcard to your customers a couple of weeks before gallery openings

-The average sales of pottery at a Rosen show is $20,000. Do not expect to be successful if you cannot produce more than $15,000 worth per year. If you prefer to only produce $5,000-10,000 per year, consider a Niche Magazine ad instead.

-A wholesale booth at a Rosen Show will cost you a total of $3000 to $5000 overhead.

-Pricing depends on two factors: What the market will bear and what your overhead demands.

-Exclusivity with a gallery should be a precautionary period to protect yourself from a gallery who doesn't promote you and to protect them from an artist who doesn't provide product. To assist them in promoting you, six weeks after shipping your product call to see if it is moving. If it isn't, think of offering them cooperative advertising or a postcard or whatever you can think of to entice sales.

MISCELLANEOUS QUIPS FROM THE INTERNET: 'How do you jump start creativity? 1. Take the same old pots and turn them upside down to see what kind of form you get. Some bowls turn into nice vase shapes, some vases turn into nice chalice forms, etc. You could also try stacking your forms or turning them on their sides to see what could be made if you put several together. 2. Look at your same old pots and isolate one feature of them, let's say the foot ring or the rim. Make the piece again, but exaggerate or emphasize that one feature. 3. Change the scale of your work. Take your smaller forms and make them bigger, and your bigger forms smaller. 4. And when all else fails, look at pictures, go to exhibits, do workshops, listen to lectures. There is nothing more motivating than that' (from Douglas Gray, via Mark Heimann). 'On the subject of people asking for discounts, I have a friend who was asked once at a fair "Could you give me a better price on this?" I think the piece was priced at $50, so my friend said "Sure, how about $60, that's a better price."' (from Paul Lewing, also via Mark Heimann)
