December 2001 and January 2002 OPA Newsletter NEXT MEETING: FRIDAY, JANUARY 11th at Multnomah Art Center, 7688 SW Capitol Hwy in Portland6:30pm: OPA General Meeting: Call Ginger Steele to put something on the agenda. Bring items for the swap table, snacks for the hospitality table, Empty Bowls donations, announcements for the room divider 7pm: Program: Wood-Fire Panel: We will be treated to a panel from noted potters who fire with wood: Nils Lou; Jay Widmer; Hiroshi Ogawa; Stephen Mickey; Richard Rowland; Tom Kearchner and Thomas Rohr. All of them own an anagama (or something similar) kiln in or near Oregon. They will each show a few slides illustrating their kiln and pieces fired in it. We will have the opportunity to ask questions and hear how their firing techniques have evolved with experience. It will be a special treat to have so much cumulative wisdom on the subject of wood fire together on one panel! NEXT BOARD MEETING: Monday, Feb 11th 2002, 6:30pm at Victoria Shaw’s house, 4806 NE Place (Place is very important, not Road, Avenue or Street!), Portland. NEXT NEWSLETTER DEADLINE: February 15, 2002. Please submit information in writing to Janet Buskirk, 3624 SE Yamhill, Portland OR 97214. email janetbuskirk@yahoo.com OPA JURIED SHOW: “Visions and Inspirations of the Oregon Potters’ Association” will be the OPA sponsored juried exhibition at Contemporary Crafts Gallery in Portland. It is scheduled to open April 18th and run through June 16th, 2002.Slides are due Tues, Jan 15th (they must be received then, not postmarked). The selection committee will meet Tues, Jan 22nd, and will notify selected members and mentors immediately after this. Work is due at CCG Fri, Mar 29th, 2002. The show works this way: Twelve to 15 OPA members will be selected for this exhibition. Each member will identify a “mentor” clay artist from outside the Oregon area with whom they would like to show. This guest artist mentor should be someone the selected OPA member admires, respects, or who has served as a mentor in the past. The OPA member does not have to know the mentor artist. Selected OPA members will show one piece of their current work. Their mentor will show one to three pieces depending on space. A brief written statement regarding the relationship between the OPA member and the mentor will be included in the exhibition. The exact number of OPA members and mentors will be determined by space considerations. The space is limited, and more than twelve pairs of artists will be chosen only if they work they make will fit into the gallery. Take a look at the December issue of Ceramics Monthly. The article “25 Select 25” is about a similar show at Lill Street Art Center in Chicago. This exhibition will demonstrate the broad vision and inspiration within the OPA. It will increase awareness of the OPA within the artistic community and the general public, and it will educate the public about contemporary ceramics. Possible activities concurrent with the exhibit are:
Eligibility and selection process: All OPA members, including new and long-time members who are potters, sculptors, educators, full-time or part-time artists, will be eligible and are encouraged to apply. To be considered for the exhibition, members must submit 10 slides of their current work and a current resume. Also include the name, address and phone number (if known), images (slides, Xeroxes, magazine clippings) and information on the mentor and their work. This must be received by Jan 15th (not postmarked). Send to Ted Vogel, Art Dept, Lewis & Clark College, 0615 SW Palatine Hill Rd, Portland OR 97219. There is a handy application form on page 9. Use it or write this information on a piece of paper and mail it in! Please direct questions to any of the following OPA Exhibition Committee Members (they are ineligible for the competition): Victoria Christen 503-753-1783; Pat Horsley 503-771-5156; Patty Maly 503-452-9618; Deborah Shapiro 503-624-5780; Ted Vogel 503-768-7398. GROUP BUY: Advancer Kiln Shelves. These are the great, super-thin, super high tech, lightweight shelves that many of us use and love. They cost a lot, but lumbar surgery costs more. If over 10 in each size are ordered, they will cost $132 each for 12x24”, $180 each for 14x28.” Add $2.50 per shelf for packing, plus shipping. If less than 10 are ordered, add about $7 per shelf. The order will be placed by December 25. Call Carol Lebreton, OPA ELECTIONS: The elections for the 2002 board will be at the January meeting. We already have many new nominees or incumbents who wish to serve longer (we can always have more than one nominee for a position!). One position which has no nominee is the President-Elect! A few positions are 2-year terms and already are full. Please call Sandy Brown (503-552-8295) by January 5th, 2002 if you are interested in any of the positions below. Officers: President (Ginger Steele, voted in last year) President-Elect (this person will be President in 2003) Secretary Treasurer (Ramona Searle, this is her 2nd year in a 2 year position) Board Members: President Emeritus (Sandy Brown, last year’s President) Newsletter Editor Board Member at Large (12 positions available) Committee Chairs: Program Chair Showcase Chair Clay in Education Chair Empty Bowls Chair Empty Bowls Co Chair Hospitality Chair Justice Center Window Display Coordinator Membership Chair Mentor Chair Picnic Chair Webmaster Workshop Chair OPA AS A PROFESSIONAL ORGANIZATION: At the last board meeting, Don Sprague discussed what more the OPA could do for potters and their development. He spoke about other professional organizations, and how they charged more money for dues, but they offered their members more options. Could we be doing more? Could we plan a campaign to raise public awareness about using handmade pottery? Could we work more on our own development? This is food for thought. THANK YOU to the people who sent slides for the November program, and a big thank you to Ellen Currans for her great demonstration! We all learned a lot and may eventually be able to make pots with as much class as Ellen’s. A few hot tips from Ellen: She uses a large rubber squeegee to remove the canvas texture from her slabs. Prior to texturing a slab, she brushes her clay with cornstarch to keep it smooth and non-sticky. To push her clay into textured areas, she places a thin piece of dry plastic on the piece, then rubs it with a dry sponge (this pushes the clay into the textured surface without marring the side you are sponging). WD-40 is her mold release of choice; she buys it in gallons and applies it with a sponge brush. She uses a nifty tool to bevel the edges of her clay: Veritass (spelling?) tools, she recommends the larger ones (they look like can openers and are available at woodworking suppliers). For texturing, she often uses embossed wallpaper. One brand she likes is Anaglypta (they have a web site, Home Depot has their catalogues). She sprays the wallpaper with clear acrylic sealer to keep it from absorbing water. Ellen was generous enough to share her clay formula. CLAYFEST 2002 is scheduled for Oct 12-13, 2002. Planning will begin in February, and there are some Committee Chair positions available: Registrar Chair Sponsorship ChairPublicity Chair CASH Trainee Secretary TraineeWorkshift Trainee Building Trainee Gallery/Physical Trainee Please consider supporting the efforts of these mid-valley Oregon potters by volunteering your time and expertise to make ClayFest 2002 an even better show! For information call Don Clarke 541-683-6330, ddclarke@efn.org EMPTY BOWLS EUGENE will be the first Friday in March. Last year they sold $13,000 worth of work in less than one hour. They ran out of bowls. They can use more donations! If you have any work to donate, please call Frank Gosar (541-607-2708) or Kay Irish (541-935-4327)EMPTY BOWLS PORTLAND: Empty Bowls will once again occur on 4th of July weekend at the Waterfront Park Blues Festival. We are, of course, looking for contributions already! Please bring your bowls or other contributions for to the January OPA meeting. This year more demands than ever will be made on the food bank due to unemployment, the poor economy and a list of things not under our control. Your generous donation will help. Thank you. OPA has preferred Mother’s Day weekend in the past, and I have tentatively reserved that weekend for us in 2003. We will be in a brand new Exhibit Hall at the Convention Center (Hall E), because our usual space (Hall A) has been reserved by a much bigger fish than we are. Management at the Convention Center assures me that the amenities, meeting rooms, and all will be virtually identical to our current space. Unless I hear a loud hue and cry from you all, I will proceed to draw up a contract (we have to plan eighteen months ahead to secure a space). Incidentally, the dates for the 2003 Show would be May 9-11 (set up May 7-8). As you probably know, dates for the 2002 show are May 3-5. Same hall, same layout as in 2001, with one more sales lane to try to decrease the Friday morning line nightmare. Thanks to Sam Sloan for securing the extra space. It cost us a few more bucks but the Steering Committee thought it would be money well spent. The Convention Center management also tells me that parking will be much improved next year, as half the new lot will be completed. We’ll still provide the “drive around” service that we instituted last year – customers loved it! And so did the work shift folks that would have had to carry parcels to remote parking areas..... Our music for Friday night will be “Rose in the Heather” – a Celtic folk band that has a fine sound, not too loud, not too “elevator”. Good peoples, too! Please send your publicity materials – slides/photos of yourself and your work – to Cyra DuQuella (Poster Chair) and Linda Haworth (Publicity Chair). If any OPA member wants to receive the Showcase Steering Committee minutes, either via e-mail or US Postal, please contact Anne Stecker, our most excellent secretary [(503) 399-0590, annestecker@hotmail.com]. She will add your name to “the list”. As always, if you have any Showcase questions or suggestions, please call or write. Happy Holidays! -Mark Heimann, Showcase 2002 Chair (503) 631-8686 / markmann@teleport.com SHOWCASE 2002 will be May 3-5, 2002 at the Oregon Convention Center in Portland. Set up will be May 1 & 2. A preliminary reservation has been made for 2003 for May 9-11 in Exhibit Hall E (this is a different hall than usual) at the Convention CenterMAILING LISTS: Please send your mailing lists to Ginger Steele, Mail List Chair, for addition to the Showcase mailing list. Names will be used only to publicize Showcase. Send your mail list in any readable form (handwritten, typed, on computer disk…) to 3285 NW Susbauer Rd, Cornelius OR 97113. PUBLICITY PHOTOS/PHOTOS FOR POSTER: Showcase always needs photos and slides for the posters, advertisements and newspaper articles. These should be good quality, of your work or of you working. Please send items for the poster to Cyra DuQuella at 131 SE 74th, Portland OR 97215. Send items for advertisements and publicity to Linda Haworth, 128 E Main St, Hillsboro OR 97123. Remember that Linda can use multiple copies of the same images, since she sends them out to various different places. Do we want to be strictly commercial? Do we want growth? Lots of growth? Controlled growth? What about admission charges? They will look at some of the original Showcase goals, as well as current concerns of our membership. SHOWCASE GALLERY: Do not forget that you may still apply to be in the Gallery at Showcase. The deadline is Jan 31. Send your name, address, phone # and social security # to Linda Bourne, 27309 SW 145th, Sherwood OR 97140 SHOWCASE BUDGET INCREASES: A quick word about the 10% annual increases to Showcase budgets. We do not spend 10% more per year in every budget category. We do budget 10% more in each category, but we encourage everyone to watch their costs and we hope that they do not spend their entire budget. Their budget for each year is based on what they actually spent the year before, not what they were budgeted. We must budget for unexpected things, and a cautious budget must actually budget more than what would normally be spent. If we consistently budgeted less than we spend, then we would have a shortfall and the Steering Committee would panic. Does this all make sense? If not, please ask one of your Steering Committee members.NEXT STEERING COMMITTEE MEETING: January 11th, 2002, 3pm (before OPA general meeting) at Janet Buskirk’s house, 3624 SE Yamhill St in Portland, 503-231-2810 EXTRA SPACE: Do you remember the extra space we had at the show last year? We were told that we would be able to use that space again, then we were told that we could not use it, now we are told that we can use it but we must pay for it. So, we are paying rent for it. If this does not change again, that is. PARKING: The Convention Center says that they will have part of the new parking lot finished in time for Showcase 2002. TIME PAYMENTS: Leslie Lee put together a proposal for Showcase that enables participants to accept time payments. The general idea is that a customer would have to pay Showcase it’s percentage before the customer leaves the show. The customer and the artist would then negotiate how the remaining payments would be made, and whether the artist or customer would retain the piece during the payments period. There is, of course, a form to fill out. There will be a minimum purchase amount ($500 was the number the Steering Committee preferred), and this will be tried for one year. POSITION OPEN: TREASURER, CASH SALES, TRAINEE: There is an opening for a trainee to take over the Treasurer- Cash Chair position for 2003. Cheryl Kempner currently is chair and will be retiring after 2002 Showcase. The committee is responsible for all of the cash at Showcase; counting it, depositing it making sure there is enough in the safe to start the day etc. You need to be available at the show throughout the entire event. This is a good job for out of towners because all of the work occurs at Showcase. For more information call Cheryl 541-344-3460. Please submit an application in writing by January 2, 2002, outlining your qualifications, involvement with OPA and anything else that would help us know who you are. Since this person will be handling all of the Cash, we need to know you very well. Send a letter of application to: Nancy Hart Committee Placement Chair 6161 S. W. Salmon St. Portland, OR 97221 (503) 292-2165 NEW STUDY GROUPS FOR FUTURE OF SHOWCASE: Two groups are forming to examine the past, current and future goals of Showcase. The first group is the “Fair Fee” study group. This group consists of: Natalie Warrens (coordinator, (503) 282-1092, nw2@uswest.net); Anne Stecker; Ramona Searle; Larry Nelson; Cindy Clark; Babette Harvey; Prune Wickart; Jim Keith; Janet Buskirk. They will be examining the costs of producing Showcase, and what percentage of these costs should be paid by the Showcase booth fee and what percentage should be paid by the sales commission. They will try to come up with as fair a solution as is possible, balancing the high and low income producers..The second group is the Showcase Vision group. This group consists of: Chuck Liebert (Coordinator) cgliebert@worldnet.att.net); Cynthia Spencer; Ellen Currans; Victoria Littlejohn; Natalie Warrens; Marilyn Woods; Lyn Sedlak-Ford; Prune Wickart; Babette Harvey. This group will examine the future goals of Showcase.OPPORTUNITIES SUBMISSIONS SOUGHT by Crafts Report Magazine for their “Insights” section. Deadline for ceramics is Jan 15 for the April issue.
