"...they are substituting their voices for ours...if they want to continue to help Indians artistically I think that what they should do...(is) donate 10% of their royalties to the American Indian College Fund and I would encourage anybody out there who is using Native methods or Native themes, whether you are a writer, painter, sculptor, whatever, that you donate 10% of your income to the Native American College Fund. That’s an Indian thing to do and we would admire you for it."

FEBRUARY/MARCH 2001

NEXT OPA MEETING: Friday, March 9th at the Multnomah Art Center, 7688 SW Capitol Hwy in Portland

6:30pm: Potluck Dinner! The March meeting’s primary goal is the selection of booths for Showcase, so we do not have time to have a lengthy speaker or panel discussion. Instead we will feature YOU and YOUR POTLUCK DISH and have dinner together. Please bring a generous dish of warm food, salad, side dish or dessert to share. Also bring serving utensils, your own plate, cup and silverware. We will provide coffee, drinks and music. This is a great time to meet new and old members and explore the tremendous human resource that is OPA. Future programs include a presentation by Steven Hill in May, the Best of Show Award winner from Showcase 2001 (ideally in July), and a panel of woodfire potters in November. Please speak to either Deborah Shapiro or Laurie Childers if you have ideas for future programs.

7pm: Showcase Meeting. If you are planning to be in Showcase, it is highly recommended that you attend these meetings. Showcase is a cooperative show, and communication is so much easier if participants attend the meetings! Thanks!

7:30pm: OPA Business meeting. Call Sandy Brown 503-552-8695 if you have items for the agenda. Bring items for the swap table, notices to pin to the room divider, etc

8pm: Showcase booth location allocation. This year’s space allocation will be similar to last year’s. The process will be done with these guidelines:

1. You will be called by your ranking based on your points.

2. You will either have to be at the March meeting or send a proxy to choose your booth space. Map is provided in this newsletter to help you or your proxy with booth selection. If there is no proxy, we will decide a spot for you

3. If you are "group spacing" your points will be averaged. A lottery has been done for applicants with the same number of points.

NEXT BOARD MEETING: 6:30pm April 2nd at Victoria Shaw’s house, 4806 NE 14th Place (Place is very important, not road, avenue or street) in Portland, 503-331-0950

NEXT NEWSLETTER DEADLINE: April 2, 2001. (Please notice this is earlier than usual!) Send submissions to Janet Buskirk, 3624 SE Yamhill, Portland OR 97214

GENERAL OPA INFORMATION

DONATIONS for the flood in Geri Lyn Enos’ studio have been collected. Thank you to all of the generous members who donated. If you would still like to donate, you may send donations to Ramona Searle, 131 Schilling Rd, Lyle WA 98635.

BEST OF NORTHWEST/OPA BOOTH: The OPA Guild Booth at Best of the Northwest’s Portland show is being coordinated. It will be Nov 9-11, 2001. 10x10’ booths are $370 + $38 electricity. If you would like to participate, call Ann Stecker ASAP, 503-399-0590

WORKSHOPS: Our new workshop chair, Lisa Clapp, would like to hear from you! Please fill out the enclosed questionnaire and return it to her ASAP.

OPA JURIED SHOW: Victoria Christian and Ted Vogel are still working on a juried regional show, sponsored by OPA. The current tentative plan is to have it at Contemporary Crafts in spring 2002. They are working with Contemporary Crafts to sort out a budget and they are hoping to solicit sponsors in order to offer prize money. If this show does occur, they will be needing assistance in sponsorship soliciting, publicizing the show, coordinating the jurying, and many other duties. There will be more information as this progresses.

LOCAL CLAY/CLAYFEST

CLAY FEST will be Oct 12-14. The new Chair is Don Clarke (541-683-6330, ddclarke@efn.org). Applications should be out in April and due back in June. More information will be in the next newsletter. They plan to have a new, focused publicity approach. At press time, they still had several chair positions open: Sales Tags/Bookkeeper; Pipe-n-Drape (these chairs are guaranteed a booth). They also have trainee positions: Sponsorship; Security; Registrar; Kid’s Clay; VISA. Please contact Don now if you are interested in any of these.

LOCAL CLAY now has Merry Newcomer as President and Frank Gosar as President-Elect. If you are interested in getting more involved with the Eugene clay group, contact either of them.

NEXT CLAY FEST MEETING: 6pm Wed, Feb 21 at WISTEC, 2300 Leo Harris Parkway (near Alton Baker Park) in Eugene. The next LOCAL CLAY MEETING will be Thurs, April 5, 6:30 pm at Georgies, 1471 Railroad Blvd, Eugene. Local Clay membership is $10.

EMPTY BOWLS EUGENE will be Friday March 2 at White Lotus Gallery. They still need hundreds of bowls. You can drop them off at Club Mud or Georgies in Eugene, or contact Frank Gosar (Chair) 541-607-2708. Terry Inokuma is also collecting them in Corvallis.

CERAMIC SHOWCASE

NEXT STEERING COMMITTEE MEETING: February 27, 6:30pm at Margie Adams’ house, 4011 SE Taggart in Portland. Steering Committee meeting dates vary, you may call Margie (503-235-0586) or Sumi Wu (360-693-6422) for future meeting dates.

BOOTH SELECTION: This will be at the March general meeting. Please see information at the beginning of the newsletter.

CERAMIC SHOWCASE 2001 will be May 4-6 at the Oregon Convention Center in Portland. Sumi Wu and Margie Adams are co-chairing this year’s show, and we are still looking for a co-chair (working with Margie) for 2002. If you applied for the show, you should have received your letter which tells you your points ranking and your committee assignment. If you did not receive that, contact Farshad Barman or Mark Heimann. In mid April you will receive your Showcase packet which will give you all the information you will ever want to know about our show!

PARKING LOT: The parking lots will be torn up during this year’s show. Both exhibitors and customers will have to park in other areas and take shuttles to the show. We will have a customer package pick up area in our usual loading area to try and eliminate their inconvenience.

NEW BANNERS ON MLK: There will be Showcase banners on Martin Luther King Jr Blvd for one month prior to Showcase.

MAILING LISTS: This is your plaintive message from the Mailing List Chair, Ginger Steele. Please update your mailing list and send it to Ginger NOW! We will not share your mailing list with others if you ask us not to. About one third of our customers come to the show because of the mailer. We like to mail posters to all of our past customers as well as all participants’ customers. Send it on IBM compatible disk or any readable paper copy, to Ginger Steele, 3285 NW Susbauer Rd, Cornelius OR 97113

FROM THE WRAPPING COMMITTEE: Please start collecting boxes for Showcase, if you have not already been doing so. In the April newsletter we will give a schedule for people to bring their boxes to the show (participants are each assigned a specific day, so we will not be overloaded on the first day). Everyone should bring 25, they should be flattened and bundled by size. They also should be CLEAN. This is especially true for clay boxes. Imagine your happy customer arriving home to find iron oxide stains all over their clothes. Not good. Sponging off the outside is adequate & easy. The BEST SIZE is a clay box, liquor or wine box, or produce box. We also need a few (not many) larger ones, small ones are rarely used. -Gay Liebert & Chris Nielson

EMPTY BOWLS IN PORTLAND

Please bring your Empty Bowls donations to the next meeting (or any meeting) and sign up to volunteer to work at our booth at the Blues Festival in Portland on 4th of July weekend. Stephen Mickey is planning a throw-a-thon at Mt Hood Community College. There will be majolica decorating at Jeanne Charles & Janet Buskirk’s studio, and more events are in the works. Drop off points so far are: Georgie’s, Thurman Street Studio, Mount Hood Community College (Pottery Studio), and Jan Edwards’ home. More places will be announced later. If your school is doing something for Empty Bowls, Richard Palen (503-647-1219) is the liaison with schools. This year’s chairs are Jeanne Charles (503-233-2317) and Tony Hackenbruck (503-235-4417)

POTTERY NEWS

EMPTY BOWLS in Lincoln County: OPA member Skye Etessami coordinated an Empty Bowls project which had an exhibit & sale at the Newport Visual Arts Center in December 2000. They had 112 donated bowls (many from first-time bowl makers) and 37 "art bowls". Five local caterers donated huge bowls of soup for the opening as well as fresh bread. This brought in $1900 for Lincoln County Food Share. She also went to a Montessori pre-school and third grade, where she taught kids how to make and fire bowls, then they had reception in their classrooms where their parents bought the bowls! This netted a further $350. Lincoln Co Food Share acquires 6-10 lbs of food for every dollar they receive and they serve over 900 families per month. Great job!

ART IN UNEXPECTED PLACES A Clackamas County Treasure Map, is an interesting treasure map of sculptures, murals, stained glass, interesting architecture, and other art-friendly items and events in Clackamas County. If you would like one or would like to include something in the next one, contact them. artsaction@hevanet.com, 657-6958 x2666

OREGON TAX LAWS FOR ARTISTS: Oregon does allow a subtraction for artists who donate a work of their own art to a charitable organization. The amount allowed is the difference between the fair market value and the amount actually allowed as an itemized deduction under federal law. Call 503-378-4988 or 800-356-4222 with questions

STUDIO POTTER NETWORK will have their annual fund-raiser at NCECA, March 28-30. The theme will be "Beautiful Soup" and they are looking for donations of anything that has to do with serving or eating soup. This is a great organization which promotes grassroots organization within the ceramics community. Yes, you donate your piece to them, but it will be seen by thousands of potters from all over the world. You may ship work to Studio Potter Network, Chris Schafale, 209 N Woodrow St, Fuquay-Varina, NC 27526. They need to be received by March 26, 2001. You can also try to talk your friends who are going to NCECA into taking your work in their luggage.

AN AMUSING EXHIBIT announcement was sent in by Cynthia Spencer- Jim Bosley, the well-known morning TV personality, will exhibit his mosaic terra cotta pots at Lawrence Gallery in February.

TOZAN WOOD KILN/INTERNATIONAL WOOD KILN FESTIVAL: The Tozan kilns are a Noborigama-type kiln with a special "doge" chamber in the front which appears to be similar to an anagama-style chamber. They are woodfired, and there are only three in the world. One is in Nanaimo, BC, and the Tozan Cultural Society in Nanaimo will host the 2001 International Wood Fire Festival July 30-August 10. It is unclear how much this will cost. It will include demos, firings, slides, shows, and more. 250-245-486,7900 5th St, Nanaimo BC Canada, V9R 5S5, http://www.tozan.bc.ca/

STUDIO SAFETY is the topic of an article in the Jan/Feb Clay Times. It mentions fumes, dust and waste disposal. The article points out that we legally must have Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) for all of our studio chemicals, and if chemicals are too old for these to be available, we cannot legally use them. Chemicals also must have their original labels. We also probably all violate federal laws about disposal of water and dust contaminated with barium, chromium, copper, iron, manganese, zinc and other chemicals. Read the article or email the author (Monona Rossol) at 75054.2542@compuserve.com

EYEWEAR FOR GLASS, CERAMIC & METAL WORKERS: (from article in the Assoc of Clay & Glass Artists in California newsletter by Monona Rossol of Art, Craft & Theater Safety (ACTS), www.caseweb.com/ACTS, ACTSNYC@cs.com) There are three types of light emitted by glowing objects: infrared (IR), ultraviolet (UV) and visible. In welding processes, more UV light is produced. In glass and ceramic work, more IR light is produced. This is the type of light that feels like heat when it hits your skin. Your eye has no heat/pain sensors, so you cannot feel the IR heat which could be causing damage that will lead to cataracts. ACTS has recently changed their recommendations for ceramists’ eyewear. Their previous recommendations were based on some very confusing studies by NIOSH, but recently some Italian researchers studied glassworkers who worked in close proximity to glass furnaces (my understanding is that glass furnaces are typically what we would call ‘stoneware temperatures’ -ed). Their research showed alarming exposure to IR-B and IR-C light. IR-A light is measured as ~760-1400nm, IR-B is 1400-3000nm, IR-C is 3000-1,000,000nm. This may mean nothing to you, but it should mean something to the person selling you your safety goggles.

Their recommendations are that we wear lenses that provide very low IR transmission, good visible transmission, low level optical aberrations, and high impact resistance to penetration by hot material. The problem they found is that lenses are generally only tested for light radiation in the 770-2000 nm range. It is not normal for anyone to report IR transmission above 2000nm, so the eyewear we need has probably not been tested for our applications! Ask your supplier for eyewear that protects you in all IR ranges, especially the high IR-C range. If you find something that really is supposed to work in those ranges, please tell your newsletter editor so I can pass the word along! (I have kept a copy of this article. You can call me if you have questions, or check the website listed at the beginning of this section. -ed)

MERCHANT CREDIT CARDS: If you use Discover/ Novus for your merchant credit card account & received a nasty letter from their VISA/Mastercard provider (FDMS) stating that you will be assessed huge new fees, take heart. A few of us have had our fees waived by pointing out that we are part of the "Oregon Potters Association Franchise". Call FDMS (800-848-0053) with your merchant # in hand and beg.

POTTERS IN FRANCE: Jean Nicolas and Vivianne Gerard, the potters from Provance who gave a slide talk at the last OPA meeting, gave us some copies of a list of potters who live and work in France. This list does not actually include telephone numbers and addresses, but it does give some information about each of these potters. If you are planning a trip to France and want to visit potters, your editor has a copy of this list, as do OPA members Ray and Jere Grimm (they have probably visited many of these potters).

GALLERY TROUBLE: OPA member Barbara Hertel reports that she has been having trouble receiving payment from Blue Spruce Gallery in Bend. If any other OPA members are having problems with them, please contact her 503-648-2483. A reminder to all of you who are looking for new galleries in which to show, always ask for the names of a few artists who show there, and call them to ask about the gallery!

PAUL SOLDNER VIDEO: "The Courage to Explore", a 31 minute video about Soldner’s raku & salt firing, throwing, handbuilding, low fire techniques and more. For more info contact Colleen Black-Semelka, 919-933-4102, rakupots@bellsouth.net

HORSETAIL RAKU: Have you been fascinated by those "horsetail glazed" pieces with the intriguing soft lines which encircle the piece? An article in the Jan/Feb Clay Times tells you how to do that. Interestingly, it is a process that is done on a hot pot that has just been pulled out of the kiln.

HIRADO PORCELAIN from Japan at the Seattle Asian Art Museum through July 8. Also there are ongoing exhibits of Chinese Celadon and Korean Koryo at Seattle Art Museum on the 3rd floor. 1st Thursdays free at SAM.

SHIMPO CERAMICS has a new website offering general information, catalogues, instruction manuals, drawings, etc. www.shimpoceramics.com

US PIGMENT, the chemical supply company, does sell directly to potters. I just received their price list, and frits, colorants and many of our fluxes are very reasonably priced. 800-472-9500, www.uspigment.com
