You may donate bowls or any other type of work that you make. Donations will be accepted at the next meeting, at Showcase, or you can call to make arrangements. The chairs, Jeanne Charles (502-233-2317, jeannecharles@juno.com) and Tony Hackenbruck (503-235-4417) are also beginning to schedule volunteers. This is a really fun event. There will also be some glazing parties in late June at Jeanne Charles and Janet Buskirk’s studio- more details in the June newsletter (or call us!). The proceeds from this go to the Oregon Food Bank.

CLAY FEST 2002: This year’s show will be Saturday-Sunday, October 12-13 at the Lane County Fairgrounds in Eugene. Last year’s show participants should have already received their applications. Anyone else who is interested, contact Joe Davis (registrar@clayfest.org). Show space is allocated based on postmark date, with final deadline of June 1. There will be a large postcard for mailing, smaller postcards to be handed out by participants, a poster, radio underwriting from two PBS stations, newspaper ads, a show at the Eugene Airport. There is also a new website: www.clayfest.org. For general information, contact the show chair, Don Clarke (information@clayfest.org)

CERAMIC SHOWCASE 2002

SHOWCASE, as you probably know, will be May 3-5 at the Oregon Convention Center in Portland. This year’s Chair is Mark Heimann (thanks for another great year, Boss!). Hopefully you will have no last minute crisis requiring you to contact him at 503-631-8686

GROUP BOOTH CHAIR-DAVID FITZPATRICK has a new telephone number: 503-475-3809

BALLOTS: Your Showcase ballots are enclosed in this newsletter. They are also available from Deborah Shapiro at the show. Every OPA member is welcome to vote for their favorite gallery piece (vote Thursday evening and Friday before 9:30am) and favorite booth (vote before 11am Friday)

LOBBY DISPLAY: This year the display will feature bowls of all shapes and sizes. We are looking for a few stunning or dramatic bowls which can hang on the wall and will receive prominent placement. We also will put bowls on pedestals. All OPA members may put work in the Lobby Display. Bring your bowl, and a pedestal on which to display it, to the lobby during Showcase setup, Wed May 8 (10am-5pm) or Thurs (10am-1pm). Last year 65 potters were featured in the teapot display and the sales were exceptional. I appreciate knowing in advance if you plan to participate, please email me at sedlakford@mac.com. -Lyn Sedlak-Ford

EMPTY BOXES: The Wrapping Chair reminds you to bring empty boxes to Showcase. We need CLEAN, empty, flattened boxes. Clay boxes are a nice size, as are liquor or produce boxes. We need a few bigger ones, but do not need small ones. Everyone please bring 25 boxes to the wrapping area at Showcase. Thanks!

CONCURRENT WITH SHOWCASE will be the Glass Guild Show, Handweavers Show, Oregon Law Institute and a Car Show

PHOTOGRAPHER AT SHOWCASE: Courtney Frisse will be set up at Showcase from Wed throughout most of the show.

COMMITTEES: Everyone who has dropped out of Showcase is continuing to do their committee work! This is very helpful, since dropouts can often leave us in a bind. Thanks, everyone!

BROKEN POTS: If you have broken pots at the show, you must report them to the Chair and fill out a form at the show. The Steering Committee will meet immediately after showcase (as last year). Steering committee members should listen for the announcement.

WRAP UP MEETING: May 13th, 4pm at Mark Heimann’s. A postcard with directions will be sent to Committee Chairs.

POINTS NEEDED TO GET INTO SHOWCASE: This year, applicants for Showcase received a full booth if they had 18 points or more, a half booth with 11-17 points, and group booth space with 7-10 points. Under 7 points were wait listed.

EXTRA SPACE: After many negotiations (thanks to our hard working Building Committee!) we will have the extra space for the sales area that we used last year. This space is actually in the exhibit hall next to Showcase, and we will be able to access it on Thursday (not Wednesday)

INFO-PACKS: The Info Packs were mailed in mid April. If you did not receive an Info Pack: Booth/Group Booth participants call Barbara Hertel at (503)648-2483 or (503)992-7579. Gallery-Only participants call Susan Adams at (541)923-5308 or Email: arpots@bendnet.com. Please read these!

FAIR FEES QUESTIONNAIRE: In this newsletter you will find a questionnaire from the Fair Fees study group. Please fill it out!

WORKSHIFTS: The Showcase Info Packets were mailed in mid-April. Please check all 3 days for possible workshifts. If you are unable to work the shifts listed on the schedule, call Gay Liebert at (503)658-4457 ASAP. If you switch workshifts with someone, call Gay (or send a postcard or email, cgliebert@worldnet.att.net) with those changes so that the printed schedule can be kept accurate. If any newcomers or volunteers would like to help, there is still time to donate your invaluable time & energy by working a shift. It's a great way to see fabulous pottery, meet fellow potters, and be part of an awesome show.

Showcase is a joint effort, it is important for each participant to work their shifts or see that those shifts are covered if a last minute crisis prevents you from doing so. Please start your shift on time as the previous shift cannot leave until you show up. If any newcomers or volunteers would like to help, there is still time to donate your invaluable time & energy by working a shift. It's a great way to see fabulous pottery, meet fellow mud mavens, and be part of an awesome show (thank you!).

Leslie Lee says "THANK YOU everyone for the impressive check we received from OPA's fund-raising effort on our behalf.  The money is, of course, a big help with uninsured expenses, but the contributions also represent your healing good wishes, which is of even greater value. Even before my surgery in January confirmed ovarian cancer I felt buoyed by tremendous waves of support and believe that all "prayers", "white light", "positive thoughts","good ju-ju" "mojo", and "The Force" sent to me through cards, email and the cosmos, kept the cancer contained and my prognosis excellent.  The chemotherapy I'm doing now is more insurance than treatment; the last round will be right after SHOWCASE. Dennis and I will be there, with limited wares but proud to be part of such a supportive group and grateful to be the recipients of such unbounded generosity and good will.  See you at the show and lovin' you back!"

IN MEMORY OF PETER VOULKOS:

Peter Voulkos, one of the great influences in recent ceramic history, died on February 16th of a heart attack after teaching all day at a workshop in Ohio. He was 78. Many of us have been influenced greatly by Voulkos and his cronies, and his loss begins to begins to end an era of pushing ceramic boundaries.

POTTERY NEWS

METAL LEACHING FROM GLAZES: Some places that test for leaching in glazes are:

Alfred Analytical Laboratory: Each leachate test costs $10. For each metal the cost is also $10. For example, if you send 2 cups for testing @ $10 each, cost is $20. If one cup is tested for 2 metals, add $20; if the other cup is analyzed for 1 metal, the 2 cups and 3 metals add up to a total of $50. Most people have them test for at least two metals, and common metals to test are cadmium, chromium, lead, copper, cobalt nickel, manganese, barium, zinc, boron and iron. All these metals are toxic if they get into our food at certain levels. However, the US FDA only regulates lead and cadmium in ceramic glazes. FDA has stated its concern about the other metals, but they have not yet set standards for them. Until they do, they use the US EPA drinking water standards as guidelines. You can mail your pieces to them, and include return postage if you want the pieces back. If you are not sure what to test for, send the your glaze formula (or a MSDS if it is a commercial glaze). They also can test for other chemicals, such as pesticides, but these tests cost more Contact them at Alfred Research Park, 4964 Kenyon Road, Alfred Station, New York 14803, (T) 607 478 8074 (F) 607 478 5324 (e.) ats@infoblvd.net.

BSC Lab: Their cost is $5 per pot plus $13 per metal (one pot/one metal is $18, one pot/two metals in $31, etc). The pots are not destroyed by the test, but sometimes the glaze fades a bit. The only contact info I have for them is electronic: www.bsclab.com or bsclab@brandywine.net. The shipping and other requirements look comparable between these two labs.

There are also local labs that can do these tests. The disadvantage of the local labs is that they are not as familiar with potters’ needs, and are not as able to help you assess the results. In Portland, they are listed in the Yellow Pages under “Laboratories-Testing”, and OPA member Darris Dietz has used Coffey Laboraties, Inc, 12423 NE Whitaker Way, Portland, 503-254-1794.

MORE THAN YOU EVER WANTED TO KNOW ABOUT CELADONS: OPA member Chris Nielsen recently tested about 50 celadons from Nigel Wood's 1999 'Chinese Glazes' at Cone 10-11, so you don't have to! These are

All based on chemical analysis of original glazes going back a thousand years or so, reformulated for modern materials. Many were overfired, underfired or otherwise undesirable, but there are some great ones, and good information for further exploration. If you're fascinated with celadon, give him a call at 503-282-7812.

CERAMIC ART BUSINESSES were examined in the April issue of The Crafts Report. Of 57 people who responded to their questionnaire, most full-time professionals spent $1000-10,000 per year on materials, 35% work alone (40% had “1 to 2” people), 52% had been doing this for over 15 years, and they made their money from: retail shows (39%); wholesale shows (33%); sell direct to galleries (16%); consign to galleries (5%); internet (4%); other (3%). They were about evenly divided between people whose only income was from crafts, and people in a household with another type of income.

CERAMIC FILLERS AND ADHESIVES: The last time your editor visited RHI Refractories in Portland, they handed me a free sample of their Inswool Caulk (this is insulating ceramic fiber in semi-liquid form). I got out my caulk gun and promptly filled all the holes in my kiln. Eight firings down the road, the little blobs of ceramic fiber stuff are still doing their job, and it sure was easy to use. Also, I recently heard of the company Sauereisen, they manufacture a variety of ceramic cements for sealing, insulating, coating, etc, that go to 3000 degrees F. www.sauereisen.com, 412-963-0303
