--The jurying process is not impartial. As someone said, "There is nothing fair in life and this is an example." Juries are but the sum of their parts. Maybe someone is in a bad mood. Maybe they’re recovering from rich food at lunch. Maybe your slides are sandwiched in between ones that are better or worse. "Strange things happen when people are in a room together".

At a dinner party a brain surgeon said to her that he was going to be a writer when he retired. She answered that she thought she might take up brain surgery when she retired.
-- attributed to acclaimed Canadian author Margaret Atwood. (does this apply to folks talking about "doing pottery"?

Give yourself a break! If you feel overwhelmed by the drive to produce art and the need to market it, you are probably not performing at your peak. If you have to, sit down with your calendar right now and block out time for other things that must be done in order for you to feel fulfilled. Think of one thing you have been putting off that would bring you a little joy. Just do it.

OPA MEETING: FRIDAY, MAY 16th at Multnomah Art Center, 7688 SW Capitol Hwy in Portland. Mark your calendars with the next few meetings: July 11 and Nov 14.

6:30pm: OPA General Meeting. Contact Michael Fromme, michaelfromme@msn.com (best way to contact her) to put items on the agenda. Bring items for the swap table, International Finger Food (see below) for the hospitality table and Empty Bowls donations.

7:15pm: Following the Showcase Wrap-up, It is International Night. OPA's very own Ken Pincus will show slides he took at an international wood-fire Conference in Japan in 2001. Jennifer Yates will show slides of working with potters in Jamaica. Tom Rohr will show slides of working with potters in Spain, Colombia, and Canada. We may yet have other surprise additions to the program. Have you ever been interested in how to connect with potters in other countries? Curious about what their kilns look like? Curious about what folks are making out of clay in other parts of the world? Come see and ask questions. Also, international finger-food treats would be most welcome for our table of edible delectables on that night. Upcoming programs include: this year's Showcase winner (we'll find out who you are), if possible in July; a ceramics game show-- test your skills and knowledge!-- in November; and Jim Robinson and David Waln as the funniest and most excitable glaze experts to incite your curiosity and solve your glaze dilemmas, in January 2004.

LOCAL CLAY/CLAYFEST

CLAY FEST APPLICATIONS have recently been mailed. As usual, spaces are allotted based on when your application is received back at ClayFest Headquarters, so don't delay. Also as before, applications are mailed earlier to previous participants and artists who have accumulated points. Applications are not transferable (people who have not participated or earned points can't sneak in on a passed-along app), but applications will be available to the general public April 16th.

The ClayFest powers that be are considering adding a Friday evening gala opening event, but this has been tabled for 2003 due to the lack of lead time. However, the steering committee is in favor of adding it for 2004; they will be soliciting opinions from potters at large about opening on Friday evening.

Any participants interested in having their work appear on the poster or either of the two postcards for ClayFest 2003 need to provide photos (electronic files preferred) to Frank Gosar. Do it now! Deadlines are: 6/1 for small postcard, 6/30 large card or poster, 7/30 for print advertising.

This year’s ClayFest Chair is Robert Wolchock, Night Owl Mudworks

EMPTY BOWLS

PORTLAND EMPTY BOWLS: This year’s Empty Bowls in Portland will be at the Waterfront Park, July 3-6. The OPA has a booth at the festival that raises money for the Oregon Food Bank. The Food Bank is vital in these times of need to feed the hungry people in our state. Please donate some pottery and some time to this!

Pottery donations of any kind can be made, and 100% of the proceeds from the donated work go to the Food Bank. If you donate work and work two shifts, you may also sell your own work with a 25% (or more) commission going to the Food Bank. These wares typically would be put on display Saturday, depending on how the selection of donated work is holding up.

If you can store or collect pottery, please call Kristen

There will be a throw-a-thon at Georgies Basic Fire Studio to make pots to donate to Empty Bowls on May 16 and 18. Please call Kristen for more information.

There will also be a majolica glazing and decorating party organized by Janet Buskirk  and Jeanne Charles in late June. If you have cone 04 bisqueware to donate or you want to decorate some pots, call for more info.

EUGENE EMPTY BOWLS: The Eugene Empty Bowls occurred last month. As usual, when they opened the doors, there was a line of customers that stretched two blocks down the street. In a frantic three hours, they sold $21,000 worth of bowls. The average bowl probably cost about $15. The money goes to Food For Lane County. An incredible group of about 50 potters put this together, and they had impressive support from the community. Mary Hindman chaired this successful project.

LEACH POTTERY AND COTTAGE FOR SALE: The Leach Pottery is for sale and there is an effort to save it. The site is offered as two lots, the Pottery and the Cottage (home of Bernard Leach), it would be a great loss to the Ceramic community if the properties were to be separated. The Rufford Craft Centre in Nottinghamshire, England is assisting in the effort to coordinate fundraisng to buy these. The ultimate aim is to secure the Pottery and Cottage as a single unit. It is planned that both will be held in trust and administered by a group of trustees and this important site could be preserved. There is more information at www.theleachpotterystives.co.uk. TAX DEDUCTIONS FOR ARTISTS: The May 2003 issue of Crafts Report has an article about two bills that are before Congress that would allow artists to deduct the fair market value of work that they donate to qualified non-profit institutions. There are several rules that would have to be followed: work would have to be made more than 18 months before the donation; the artist has to have previously sold similar work; a written appraisal of the work would be required; the use of the work must relate to the purpose of the institution receiving it; the artist may only deduct the money from their income that related to making that type of work; the artists’ widow(er) or a collector may also take the fair market value deduction; the artist’s estate would be taxed at fair market value; a patent holder who contributes a patent would be able to take the fair market value deduction. Various art agencies around the country are asking that people contact their legislators to indicate their support of these bills.
