In spite of Oregon's poor economy and our new location in the Convention Center our sales were still strong and I believe this is due to your dedication to fine art work and a great looking show. "Special thanks to the committee chairs and my co-chair Natalie Warrens. Their attention to detail and reliability made my job easier." --Margie Adams FROM THE SHOWCASE 2004 CHAIR: "Thanks to all the committee members, Showcase chairs and volunteers for making this year’s show a great success. Your patience with the move to E Hall was greatly appreciated. The gallery move into the lobby was very successful. Congratulations also to all of our award winners. Great job! "Showcase 2004 will be back in A Hall with the addition of Hall A-1. This will double the space (but not the number of booths). The former Visions Committee is now named the Long Range Planning Committee and is working with a number of topics that will enhance our new, expanded space. If you have any Showcase concerns please contact me at nw2@attbi.com. If you have any concerns about expansion, contact Cynthia Spencer." --Natalie Warrens FROM THE WORKSHIFT CHAIR: "A special thank you to all of you who volunteered to help make sure that all the Showcase jobs were filled. With over twenty volunteers, you helped insure that everything ran smoothly. Thanks again." --Gay Liebert, Workshift Chair SHOWCASE SURVEY: Thanks to the 39 people who had booths in Showcase and took the time to fill out the Showcase survey. The members of the Planning Committee valued their suggestions and comments on the 2003 show. 68% felt that booth fees could be higher to cover costs and more than 50% thought an admission fee was not a good idea at this time. The one thing that was most appreciated about the show was the sense of community and camaraderie with other potters. More that half made mention of this. With the larger space in 2004, wider aisles, environments, sponsors, more potters, and places for customers to sit and relax were most often mentioned improvements with an emphasis on upgrading the overall looks of the show. All manner of lively suggestion were given on how to get more publicity and attract more and better customers. On the negative side, some thought that there were booths and work that were not professional and that we as a group should help these potters to be more aware of the need for excellent marketing skills both for themselves and the success and image of the show. We were really excited about all of the interesting and thoughtful responses we got from this survey. Way to go! If you would like a copy of the survey report, just email me at mwoods1@aol.com and I will send you one. If you still want to fill out the survey, send it to me and I will continue to compile the ideas. --Marilyn Woods – Planning Committee
LONG RANGE PLANNING COMMITTEE: This committee has evolved out of the Visions and Fair Fees Committees that met last year. The purpose of this committee is to steer our show into the next few years, to help plan our expansion, and to create some cohesive goals for the show. Members of this committee are meeting a lot this summer to "return Showcase 2004 to being a real Showcase of ceramics." Next year’s show will have a few more potters, but it will also have a larger gallery, more space for education and theme displays, and seating areas for us and our customers. We have invited six colleges to join us at the show and share the work of their programs and instructors. If you have any ideas or comments, contact Cynthia Spencer at cjspencer@cmug.com (a new email address) CARDBOARD PEDESTALS AT SHOWCASE: The Fire Marshall inspected our show with a fine-toothed comb this year. The result almost was that we had to remove all pedestals made out of cardboard boxes from the show. As it was, he said that we will not be allowed to use them in future years. We are negotiating this, but start thinking about your new, cardboard-free display. STORAGE UNIT: The OPA has a new, larger storage unit. The unit also has a new gate combination. If you need access to this, contact the Storage Unit Chair, Susan Whitham OPA MEMBERS BUYING WORK FROM EACH OTHER: The OPA has always had a policy that members buying work at Showcase should buy it directly from one another and subtract the commission from the total price. We do not need to make a profit from our own members by charging them a commission on sales. NEXT SHOWCASE STEERING COMMITTEE MEETING: Wed, July 30th at Natalie Warrens’ house, 3625 NE 16th Ave in Portland at 6:30pm EMPTY BOWLS EMPTY BOWLS: This year’s Empty Bowls in Portland will be at the Waterfront Park, July 3-6. The OPA has a booth at the festival that raises money for the Oregon Food Bank. The Food Bank is vital in these times of need to feed the hungry people in our state. Please donate some pottery and some time to this!Pottery donations of any kind can be made, and 100% of the proceeds from the donated work go to the Food Bank. If you donate work and work two shifts, you may also sell your own work with a commission going to the Food Bank. These wares typically would be put on display Saturday, depending on how the selection of donated work is holding up. Call Kristen Weigert-Yount to sign up for a workshift, to arrange delivery of bowls, or with your questions. Bowls (or other work) can also be dropped off at Georgie’s or at Janet Buskirk’s house. There will be a majolica glazing and decorating party at Janet Buskirk’s 2315 SE 47th in Portland on Saturday, June 28th. If you have cone 04 bisque ware to donate or you want to decorate some pots, come by. CLAYFEST & LOCAL CLAY BUSINESS The ClayFest 2003 show is full!
