NEXT OPA BOARD MEETING: Thursday, October 5 at Larry & Debi Nelson’s. 6pm potluck dinner, meeting begins at 6:30. For directions, look at picnic info (above on this page) NEXT STEERING COMMITTEE MEETING: Tuesday, Sept 12 at Contemporary Crafts, 3934 SW Corbett in Portland OPA BUSINESS NOTES FROM YOUR PRESIDENT: Greetings, everyone! Several things came up at our August 10 Board meeting, and I’d like to share them with you.- First off, we wanted to make sure that you all know that you are welcome to attend our Board and Showcase Steering Committee meetings. You can see how your Association is run, get to know fellow members, and be directly informed of activities. Not only that, but you can suggest ideas, volunteer for jobs, and help keep OPA the fine cooperative organization that it is. Dates and locations are published in the newsletter, on the website, and soon via regular e-mail “reminders”. We would love to hear your voices! - There are several opportunities for Chair and Committee positions opening. If you want to get involved, earn points, and be a more active part OPA, check the current and future newsletters for announcements. - Our data coordinator, web wizards, and newsletter editor are working hard to get OPA News to you. Whether it’s a hard copy sent by US Mail or a compatible and printable electronic document, we want you to be able to receive it in a timely manner and in the format that you prefer. Remember that it is now being published on our website so if you can’t find a hard copy you can review it there. We have changed to a mostly electronic delivery to save postage dollars (a lot of dollars, as it turns out), but we will still continue to offer the traditional ways in order to accommodate folks who “don’t do computers”. - Soapbox: Points are not the reason for the OPA! It is still what it was originally conceived to be – a group of friends that can benefit from each other’s experience, ideas, and efforts. Sure, we put on a great and nationally recognized show every year. However, if earning points for Showcase is your only motivation for being part of the OPA, please remember the other values that OPA generates -- like cooperative spirit, generosity, teamwork, and public service. - We want to improve our welcome to new, returning, and current members. So we are going to beef up our Mentorship program. We have assembled a team of volunteers (more are always welcome!) to work with the Membership and Mentor Chairs to prepare an introductory packet that will be presented to anyone joining or inquiring about the OPA. It will include a “benefits” list, perhaps a history of OPA, a sample newsletter, and whatever else we can think of that will help explain who we are. Suggestions from all of you are encouraged and appreciated! Thanks for listening, and for all you do for OPA, - Mark Heimann OPA ANNUAL STUDIO SALE GUIDE: The OPA publishes an annual guide to members’ Holiday Studio Sales. In the past, Cyra DuQuella has collected the information and put together this Guide. She is no longer able to do this, so we are looking for someone to put this guide together. There is usually a small budget to pay this person. In the meantime, participants should fill out the application (included in this Newsletter) and mail it to Janet Buskirk. If you are interested in laying out the guide, contact Janet, 503-231-2810, janetbuskirk@yahoo.com.MORE ABOUT HOLIDAY STUDIO SALES: At the July OPA Meeting, it was suggested that OPA members pool resources and mailing lists for Studio Sales during the holiday season. The plan is to match people who have a decent location, and can share that space with others, with people who are looking for a place to sell their work. If you are interested in hosting others in your space, or if you would like to find a space to share, please contact Julie Asbury. Include: Name; Address; Telephone; Email; Indicate whether you can share your space or are looking for a space. If you have specific talents to share or have specific requirements, please mention this. Email to jasburypottery@ipns.com. Julie will compile the list, then distribute it to everyone on the list.OPA/SHOWCASE POINTS: The Points Review Committee has submitted its recommendation to both OPA and Showcase. The recommendations were reviewed at two Steering Committee Meetings and at one OPA Board Meeting. At the August Steering Committee Meeting, Showcase adopted a modified version of the recommendations, these reflected all Showcase jobs that were being reviewed. OPA will review the OPA-jobs on the list at their Board Meeting on October 5 and finalize the list. All jobs were examined using the following criteria: 1. The number of hours the job requires 2. The importance of the job within our organization (if the job is performed well or poorly, will the entire organization be impacted or will most people be unaffected?) 3. What degree of honesty and absolute trust are required for this job? (Specifically, this would be for jobs handling money) 4. What specialized, hard to find skills are required for this job? (For instance: graphic design, computer fluency) 5. The “Pain in the Ass Factor” of a job. For instance, do you have to perform small tasks for the job almost every day? Every week throughout the year? Is the job always hanging over your head? This can vary in how it manifests itself, some jobs are a constant nuisance (checking OPA voice mail, for instance). Other jobs are never completely finished (Showcase Publicity, for instance) Currently, the important changes are: Past Showcase Chair, Building Co-Chair and Reconciliation Chair jobs were eliminated. Long Range Planning Chair was put into dormancy. Publicity and Advertising Co-Chair jobs were streamlined in order to make more sense, and the names were changed to “Chair” (14 points) and “Vice-Chair” (7 points). Awards Chair was lowered from 6 to 2 points. Gallery Physical Set-Up changed from 9 to 12 (this change we believe had already been made, but was not reflected in the records). Gallery Registration Chair changed from 9 to 6. Group Booth Chair changed from 6 to 9 (again, we believe this change had already been made, but was not in the records). Lobby Display Chair changed from 9 to 6 points. Cash Treasurer, Vice Chair position was created at 3 points. Traffic Chair changed from 6 to 4 points. Archive Chair created at 4 points. OPA/Showcase Manual Chair created at 6 points. A few other changes that were adopted were to give all official Trainees 2 points while in training. We also will change the Showcase participation points a bit. Currently, people receive one point for being in the gallery and two points for having a booth. These will be eliminated and replaced with a system where you will receive one point for completing all assigned workshifts and one point for completing all assigned committee work. Thus, people are rewarded for the work they do for the show, not for making money at the show. Also if people want to volunteer for more workshifts or committees, they could receive more points. All of these changes will go into effect for Showcase 2007.
SHOWCASE SHOWCASE 2007 will be May 4-6 at the Oregon Convention CenterMEXICAN POTTERS AT SHOWCASE: Jeanne Henry is working on bringing three to four potters from Mexico to this year’s Showcase. This will coincide nicely with the Cinco de Mayo celebrations that also occur that weekend, and the Portland Art Museum will be involved. At Showcase, the potters’ presence will likely be similar to the Hokkaido potters in 2005. SHOWCASE BUDGETS: The Finance Committee will send Budget Request Forms to all Showcase Committee Chairs on August 28. They are due Sept 15. If you would like to have money in your 2007 budget, please send them back promptly. If you do not receive one, contact Susan Whitham, 503-289-0516 SHOWCASE BOOTHS FEES will be going up a little bit this year. This will reflect increases in “fixed costs,” ie: insurance; rent; electricity for the Convention Center. SHOWCASE JOBS AVAILABLE: The following is a list of Chair positions that are currently available for Showcase 2007. In many instances, work begins soon, so please submit those applications! To apply for these positions, write a letter of interest. Include past experience and credentials for the specific job. Include any information that would help the Steering Committee in their selection. Applications are reviewed by the Steering Committee, who in turn, selects the chair. Mail or e-mail applications to Audrey Graham, 32493 SW Juliette, Wilsonville, OR 97070, agraham@centurytel.net.SHOWCASE SECRETARY: 9 points. Attend all Showcase Steering Committee meetings and take minutes. Type minutes and file them in hard copy & electronic copy. Distribute Minutes, agendas, special votes, and info via email and postal mail to members of the Steering Committee, Showcase Committee Chairs and entire OPA membership via the Data Coordinator. Take care of any communications and documentation as needed by Showcase Chair and the Steering Committee. Distribute information as needed from past meetings. Gather information from Showcase Committee Chairs before meetings and bring to meetings that they cannot attend. Knowledge of a word processing system is essential and email capabilities. Organizational skills are important, as well as the ability to summarize conversations and topics capturing the essence of the issue. SHOWCASE TREASURER: 15 Points. For further information on this position, please contact Ginger Steele, Showcase Chair. Education / Experience / Skills: Accounting/bookkeeping knowledge and skills are a must. Knowledge of OPA and Showcase operations is a must. Previous participation in Showcase is helpful. Previous participation on the OPA Board or Showcase Steering Committee is helpful. Computer skills including Quicken, advanced spreadsheet skills, and basic email skills are required. A Macintosh computer and software are provided by OPA. However, it was decided at the end of 2005 to convert the system to a PC in order to be more compatible with the rest of OPA. The history data is still on the Macintosh. Excellent communication skills are helpful especially after Showcase when artists are anxious to be paid. Delegation skills are very helpful. Typically the person in this job also runs for OPA Treasurer (a 15-point position as well)
EMPTY BOWLS EMPTY BOWLS in Portland did very well this year. Our sales were $18,556 plus $450 from a silent auction, for a total of $19,006. This contributed over $14,000 directly to the Oregon Food Bank. Empty Bowls was held at the Blues Festival, and the Food Bank raised $545,000 and collected 103,501 pounds of food at the event. Thanks to everyone involved for their hard work. Many clay and glass artists donated huge amounts of pieces to the booth, and we had great response from volunteers to man the booth.
