The aprons will be extra wide, made especially with throwing in mind. They are all very reasonably priced, leftovers will be sold at Showcase.

OPA ASSETS AND EQUIPMENT: Do you have any equipment that belongs to OPA? Do you have one of the laptops, copiers, calculators, even software? Our lists of who has what equipment are incomplete. Please make a list of each item you have, include make, model, serial number and what committee or job it accompanies, and send it to Holly Dubrasich, 33862 Totem Pole Rd, Lebanon OR 97355, hollyd@peak.org.

OPA PROM: Were you anxiously awaiting the rescheduled OPA Prom? The new plan is to wear our Goodwill Prom outfits to the NCECA dance on Friday, March 10. This is always a great party, everyone who goes dances until their feet are ready to fall off. Admission is free with NCECA registration, otherwise it is $15. Don’t forget to dress up in your prom outfit!

SHOWCASE

SHOWCASE 2006 will be May 5-7 at the Oregon Convention Center in Portland

SPEED THROWING! BIG POT THROWING! Applications taken from now until the March meeting to the Showcase 2006 Big Pot Throw (25 lb) and Speed Throw (off the hump). Each event will have measured clay and time limit. Each group will agree on rules for size, type, clay body etc. Other considerations may be added. Hand builders may apply! Buff women wanted! The two events will be Saturday Night starting at 7pm. Participants will not wear a mike. There will be an MC.

In two sentences, list your qualifications for either event, remembering that this is an educational/publicity event designed to inspire and entertain the public (and your fellow potters!) Someday, if someone (!) wants to work on it, maybe we can send one of us to the Clay Olympics in Italy! Email to: adriennestacey@mac.com

SHOWCASE COMMITTEE CHAIR AND TRAINEE POSITIONS AVAILABLE: There are a few positions available for this year’s Showcase. If you are interested in applying for these, please contact the current committee chair to ask what the job entails. Then contact the Committee Placement Chair, Audrey Graham, write or email her a letter of interest, please include your pertinent experience and expertise. agraham@centurytel.net, 32493 SW Juliette Dr, Wilsonville OR 97070

SPONSORSHIP TRAINEE: Work with current Sponsorship Chair, Mark Heimann, to train as the Chair of this committee. Job description: Develop and maintain financial and in-kind relationships with businesses and individuals that are willing to contribute to Showcase. Cultivate long-term friendships with current sponsors and seek additional partners. Contact Mark for more information, 503-631-8686

SHOWCASE CO-CHAIR: Train in current Chair of Show, Ginger Steele to assume the Chair position. The Chair of Showcase oversees all aspects of producing and operating the show. Interested persons should contact Ginger for fuller job description. 503-693-7721

MAILING LISTS: Get your customers to Showcase! Send ASAP! Please submit your mailing list for addition to the master Showcase list to Beverly Curtis, Mail List Chair. The preferred format is electronic, as this will save us lots of $$! Most spreadsheets or data bases are acceptable. Names, street addresses, city, state and zip should each be in separate columns or cells. If you list is not in electronic format, you may mail a hard copy. Please send lists to: bj_curtis@excite.com or Beverly Curtis, 935 NW 6th St, Gresham, OR 97030. If you have questions, call Beverly at 503-492-7757.

START SAVING BOXES NOW: Showcase always needs hundreds of clean, flattened boxes to use for customers’ purchases. Please start saving boxes now and bring them to Showcase (from John Dodero, Wrapping Committee Chair)

NEW SHOWCASE EVENT: This year, Habitat for Humanity is our special guest at Showcase. Leading the way in efforts to create affordable housing both along the devastated Gulf Coast and here in our own city, Habitat for Humanity will conduct a pottery auction to raise money to complete a home for New Orleans, and raise awareness of their national and local efforts.

Please consider donating a quality piece of pottery to this worthwhile cause. This is a great place for that exciting pot that doesn't quite match anything else in your booth or a special older piece - but NO seconds! Gallery potters may also participate.

Habitat for Humanity volunteers will conduct the auction in the 5x20' space occupied at Showcase 2005 by the Hokkaido Potters (back wall by gallery). Please bring your pot to that space during setup days. A donation form will be provided by Habitat for Humanity for your tax return. More info on HfH, www.pdxhabitat.org, 503-287-9529.

SHOWCASE INTERIORS DISPLAY: The interior display is a part of showcase where we re-create 3 rooms with walls and furniture to show the public how they can use ceramics to decorate their homes. We are looking for potters to display (and yes, sell) their work in this area. We are looking for functional and decorative items, also wall pieces and perhaps a few big planters. Even if you are gallery only, this is a great way to increase your exposure during the show.

Please e-mail Susannah Lints slints1@comcast.net and let her know what you will be bringing so we can plan our display harmoniously. A jpeg image or a good verbal description is fine. She will accept 3 items from each potter. Pots are rotated daily so as many as possible are displayed. Deliver to the show during the same hours and to the same place as gallery only drop off, tell them it's for interiors and they will have a sign in sheet for that. Pick up work at end of Showcase directly from interiors display on Sunday at 5pm.

During the show, potters may be asked for additional work as initial stocks get sold. Do not just leave pottery in the interiors display. Last year, by Sunday we had many pots magically appear resulting in a helter skelter appearance. Please drop off work ahead of time. Questions? Contact Susannah Lints, 360-260-9083, slints1@comcast.net

COMPUTERIZED TAG SYSTEM: Ginger Steele has created a new system that we hope will save an enormous amount of time for the OPA Treasurers and the various Bookkeeping committees. This system uses a standard Excel database, we will enter the artists’ names and sales information into it as the tags go to the bookkeeping room. We hope this will cut several days, if not weeks, out of the bookkeeping and treasury duties for Showcase.

STREAMLINING OPA/SHOWCASE MONEY HANDLING: In January, a group of OPA and Showcase heavies met to discuss ways to streamline the money handling, especially for Showcase. Several recommendations were made: Implementing a new computerized tag system at Showcase (see info in Showcase section); Implement specific rules that would trigger a reconciliation (for instance if the books were over ˝ % off or if someone raised a specific concern); Streamline Showcase money handling by paying for pipe-and-drape with the application, eliminating the deposit, making the Gallery-only deadline the same as the Booth deadline (Nov 15), eliminating rebates and instead having a policy of lowering the commission for one year if extra money has been made; Creating a web-based data base of membership that could be accessed by the Membership Chair, Showcase Registrar, Building Chair etc, thus eliminating our current multiple lists.

SHOWCASE MAP: At the March OPA Meeting, we will choose our Showcase booths. A map of Showcase is included in this Newsletter to aid in your decision.

EMPTY BOWLS

EMPTY BOWLS in Portland will be June 30-July 4 at the Blues Festival in Portland’s Waterfront Park. As the date approaches, we will be looking for donations of work (bowls or other items) and volunteers to man the booth. Janet Buskirk and Ginger Steele are this year’s Co-Chairs, proceeds go to the Food Bank.

FULL PINTS-EMPTY BOWLS: At Bridgeport Brewery, 1313 NW Marshall in Portland. March 9, 6-11pm (during NCECA). Listen to blues music, buy a beer stein full of beer. Proceeds go to the Oregon Food Bank. Would you like to donate a beer stein to this event? Contact Kristin Yount, 503-231-5752, Kristin@cascadia.net.

OTHER AREA CLAY GUILDS

CLAYFEST: Planning for Clayfest 2006 has begun. The show is scheduled for Oct 14-15 at the Eugene Fairgrounds. There is still time to apply to be a Trainee. Positions open are Webmaster, possibly Signage and Graphics. A Trainee position gives you an opportunity to learn the ropes by working with the current Chair before taking over in 2007. Those interested can review the job descriptions online at http://members.efn.org/~clayfest/clayfestnotes.htm

GUIDE TO NON-PROFIT BOARD SERVICE IN OREGON: If you are an OPA Board member, or on any other non-profit board, you may want to read this guide. It is published by the state and available at http://www.doj.state.or.us/ChariGroup/download/Nonprofit.pdf.

HOMELAND SECURITY WATCHING ARTISTS: The June 2005 issue of Sculpture magazine reported on two incidents of artists being suspected of subversive activities. One of the incidents was regarding Steven Kurtz, a founding member of Critical Art Ensemble and professor of art at Univ. of Buffalo, as well as Robert Ferrell, professor of genetics at University of Pittsburgh. For a while, they were facing counts of wire fraud and federal mail fraud for acquisition, transfer and possession of controlled bacteria. This was all under the US Biological Weapons Anti-Terrorism Act of 1989, expanded by the Patriot Act. The New York State Dept of Health has determined that the bacteria in question pose no danger, but the US District Attorney continues to pursue this. The materials that the Federal Government has confiscated and is using in this prosecution were part of their artwork. For more info, or to learn how to donate money to offset their huge legal fees, check www.caedefensefund.org.

There was another incident, reported in the same magazine, of an artist whose work was held by customs authorities as part of a random inspection. The gallery receiving the work had to pay for X-ray analysis of it by customs, and the inspection resulted in two Secret Service agents visiting the gallery and asking for a list of the artists in the show, “Axis of Evil, the Secret History of Sin” at Columbia College in Chicago.

OIL SPOT GLAZES are the subject of an article in the recent CeramicsTECHNICAL, issue 21. The article by John Britt goes in to great detail about how to achieve oil spot effects. In the same issue, there is also an article by Janet Hamer about CRYSTAL GLAZES. Both articles give details about glaze formulas, firing schedules and kiln atmospheres.

WANT TO BORROW LAPTOP: Free yourself from your computer! I would like the use of a PC laptop w/ modem from May 24-June 30. I am totally reliable (just ask me) and guarantee nothing happens to the computer (or I’ll replace it). I could trade some pottery. Perhaps you have an older one that’s not used much or you would like to have the thing quit nagging you for a bit. Don Clarke, ddclarke@efn.org.

MEMBER NEWS

SEEKING SPIRIT, an exhibition in celebration of MATTHEW LYON. Matt’s friends, colleagues and students will show pieces that have been inspired by his life and work. The exhibit will be at Oregon Episcopal School, 6300 SW Nicol Rd., Portland OR 97223 from April 9–May 5, 2006. Opening reception April 9, 2–5 pm. For more information, contact Marianna Crawford at 503-768-3157, crawfordm@oes.edu.

ELLEN CURRANS is on the cover of the Feb 2006 Ceramics Monthly. She has a great article in this issue, written by herself and Ginger Steele. It discussed her life and her studio practices.

PAMELA MATTSON McDONALD’s carved and sculpturally augmented work will be in “Skin Deep: The Art of Surface Design” in Florence, South Carolina. Axes of Evil was chosen for its parody of two politically charged issues - Bush's Axis of Evil statement and Timber Clear Cutting Practices.

FAITH RAHILL, PATRICK HORSLEY, HANK MURROW, LARRY & DEBI NELSON and BRAD MENNINGA are all the subjects and authors of articles in the Feb/March issue of Pottery Making Illustrated. Perhaps this editor is biased, but this looks like one of the best issues of PMI that I have seen in a long time.

KEN PINCUS was honored when a number of his pots were chosen by the Iemoto, or Headmistress, of the International Sogetsu Seminar here in Portland. This is an international seminar, his work was used for Ikebana arrangements, see them at http://www.jimleisy.com/Sogetsu/16iemotodemos/index.html,

CHRIS NIELSON was featured in the December issue of Ceramics Monthly (okay, he is no longer an OPA member, but he was one for a very long time)

NCECA SURVIVAL GUIDE: Skutt’s website (www.skutt.com/NCECA) has a NCECA survival guide. It is primarily aimed at people from out of town, giving info on Portland, it’s nightlife, restaurants, public transportation, etc. This is in addition to our own NCECA restaurant guide, available on Deb Bouchette’s website, www.aleatoric-art.com.

THANK YOU to all of the people who have volunteered to help with OPA and NCECA projects.

The OPA Panel (Mark Heimann, Patrick Horsely, Deborah Shapiro and Janet Buskirk) at NCECA wishes to thank the people who helped with the huge amount of behind the scenes work: Richard Roth, Annie Stecker, Teresa Knight, Julie Asbury, and Bev Curtis. These people have worked on the PowerPoint Presentation, collected and edited all the info for the CD, helped with all the planning and paperwork, met all the NCECA deadlines, attended countless meetings, and filled their in-boxes with limitless emails. This whole group has been incredible to work with. Thank You.

Thank you also to the many, many people who have volunteered to help with the OPA shows. There was a huge amount of work in jurying, filling slide carousels, emptying the carousels and mailing letters. The jurors spent a total of 14 hours jurying the three shows, and they did an amazing job. Frank Gosar has spent the last 2 weeks designing three posters for the shows. They look great. There remains the big jobs of show setup, sales, and break down. Thank you in advance to the people who are helping with that.

Thank you also to the people who are manning the OPA Booth at NCECA. They will be our welcoming committee to the rest of the nation’s ceramics community.

The OPA Restaurant Guide and the “Ask Me I Live Here” buttons are a great service to Conference attendees. Thanks to Deb Bouchette, Deb Shapiro and Holly Dubrasich for these. Thanks also to Boni Deal for designing the wonderful poster featuring the Permanent Collection of Showcase award winners. There are many more people who have worked on a myriad of projects. Thank you to all of you.

“ASK ME! I LIVE HERE!” BUTTONS: The OPA is acting as a host for NCECA visitors. “I hope that all OPA members who are going to the conference will wear their yellow buttons that say “ASK ME! I LIVE HERE!” along with the OPA Logo. This is our way of being friendly, of helping confused visitors. You can pick up a (free) button at the OPA Booth in the Non-profit area at the conference.” -Deb Shapiro

STUDIO TOUR: OPA is sponsoring a self-guided tour of Portland area ceramic studios. Studios will be open the weekend following NCECA, most will be open Saturday, a few open Sunday. The guide will be handed out at the OPA Booth at NCECA, it is also available on the OPA and Skutt websites (www.oregonpotters.org, www.skutt.com)

OPA SHOWS DURING NCECA: OPA is sponsoring three shows that are at the Skutt kiln company’s warehouse during NCECA. The opening reception is Friday, March 10 from 6-8pm. We can still use more volunteers to help set up and break down the shows. Set up will be Sat/Sun, March 4-5, break down will be Sun/Mon, March 12-13. This will involve packing and unpacking artwork and moving the OPA pedestals to and from the storage unit. Call Janet Buskirk, 503-231-2810, janetbuskirk@yahoo.com. We will have OPA members doing demonstrations, similar to at Showcase, on Wed, March 8. Each show has a great poster, designed by Frank Gosar. Skutt and Stash Tea have generously paid to print these.

DO YOU WANT A GUEST DURING NCECA: Do You have a guest room you are willing to share? Jackson Gray is in town Wed-Sat and is looking for a place to stay, jackpots@speakeasy.net,

Exhibitions during NCECA, March 8-11, 2006. You can check the NCECA website for complete days and hours (www.NCECA.net), but the website does have some technical difficulties with this list that prevent it appearing on some computers.
