Artist Statement
My ceramic work reflects the diverse landscape of Oregon which I have gotten to know over the past 25 years of living and recreating here. I am curious and work intuitively, allowing the material and tools to guide me, integrating the rugged surfaces of bark, the delicate veins of leaves or the weathered edges of rocks or the layers of the forest. I am also fascinated with human forms and our psyche, which I see as part of the landscape. Through hand-built techniques, I create forms that both echo and challenge our understanding of nature, culture and ourselves. Oregon’s creative culture allows me to be myself and to feel supported on this artistic journey.
Biography
Alison Hardin has been creating woodfired ceramic art for over 25 years in Portland, Oregon, guided by a deep appreciation for the tactile and improvisational nature of working with clay. Hand-building allows her to craft one-of-a-kind forms that blur the boundaries between function and sculpture and celebrate the visible marks of the handmade process. Each piece is surrendered to the wood kiln, where the unpredictable interplay of flame and ash enhances their gestural qualities, revealing the beauty in imperfection and the serendipitous magic of the fire.
Alison was selected for the nationally renowned Strictly Functional ceramic show in 2024 and has participated in several local group shows highlighting ceramic artists who woodfire.

Alison has been teaching ceramics, printmaking, painting and video production to K-12 students for over 20 years.
